The show really picks up!
luxsolace12 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts by showing the immediate aftermath of Gold Boy's suicide, and the following investigation into his death by his close friends. However, the ending of the episode reaches the hights of 'The Boys', Marie's self-harming is further shown and developed on, and the same goes for Emma with her purging, This is all finished off with one of the strongest conclusion in the entire universe (Including 'The Boys') so far, with Cate having a seizure after overusing her powers and exhausting herself finishes the episode in an absolutely gut-wrenching and intriguing cliff-hanger that pushed me to continue to watch the show!

First Day!

Warning: Spoilers
I decent follow-up that further establishes its characters and makes some decent use of themes.

Emma's purging struggles are kind of haunting to watch so far, and the whole social media influencer angle was done well for such a short amount of screen time.

Jaz's popularity is pretty fishy and suggests there's a lot more under the surface of this show than some may have initially thought (myself included). It's crazy that so many want to be a part of The 7. None of them seem like psychopaths (so far anyway).

I will say I felt a slight drop in the writing, mostly just in the dialogue. It's very "What's going on?" "I don't know."

I have a feeling this season will probs to be good. The worldbuilding is decent and some of the implications suggest the worst is yet to come for our characters.

S1.E2 - Better Than The First Episode [7/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E2) My Reaction / Review for Gen V Season 1 Episode 2 ''First Day''. Episode 1 was bad and I gave it a rating of 5/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. So Marie is now number 8 and Andre is number 1? Interesting. Many boring conversations. Marie is the main character and she is not even interesting, no character in this show is interesting in my opinion. That girl with the tail is so disgusting, ew. So those in charge at the school have a secret place where they're doing illegal experiments? Interesting. Marie's past is so sad, I kinda feel bad about her. Overall this episode is not great but it is decent and much better than the first episode. My rating is 7/10.

Worldbuilding is key

Warning: Spoilers
With the way the series is shaping out to be, I'm 80% expecting it to be a season of us just getting clues to why what's underneath the school is there even though I'm pretty sure they're already painting a pretty good picture of it.

I also I like the side story of Emma and it really does shine light on a serious issue with people's addiction to social media attention/numbers to further them completely disregarding any other parties but themself. I found it interesting

I also like Marie's.goal of meeting her sister not being dragged out and just getting straight to it (hopefully). I also like the way her character's morals kind of got gray when she got the news of her sister completely disregarding Jordan Li's request.

Also the wood's storylines is proving to be interesting in my opinion.

Super...ficial
jeroen-1063 July 2024
As someone who's not a big fan of teen dramas, "Gen V" felt overly familiar. For example, take "Wednesday"-it rehashes the same themes and conflicts, merely in a new guise. "The Boys," its predecessor, was a sharp social commentary aimed at a mature audience. Shifting this gory world to a teen-focused narrative feels odd and somewhat inappropriate.

The superficial issues of these teen characters-who have razor-thin backstories-offer little depth. Their problems seem trivial, and the lack of well-rounded characters makes it hard to care about their journeys. These characters are written as "persona templates," lacking individuality and complexity.

Moreover, the writing often feels like the weakest link. Superpowers conveniently align with plot needs, making the story predictable and less engaging. One glaring example is the lazy computer writing in Episode 2, where a character bypasses biometric protection with a mere hand wave. Such plot conveniences detract from the believability and coherence of the show.

Overall, "Gen V" fails to deliver a compelling experience and leaves much to be desired. I don't think I'll be watching it any longer.

Struggling to Find Its Footing
infinitetyler8 October 2023
I'm not sure why I'm still watching this, I'm not a fan of teen dramas. I wasn't even a fan of teen dramas when I was a teen. Cobra Kai is an example of a show that uses elements of teen drama but manages to keep a substantial amount of the audience's attention on the more action-driven plot line around the adults and their dojos. This show also tries to include an action-driven plot similar to Harry Potter or Stranger Things, but the focus is still primarily on people's relationships and feelings.

This episode seems to be trying less hard to be shocking, but now they have one less gimmick to work with. I'm just realizing how stupid the premise of this school is. It's like Hogwarts for vapid narcissists.

I also have a lot of questions about how some of these people's powers work right before I stop caring what the answers are. I think their powers work however the writers want them to work as any given situation requires. It's also difficult to keep track of which person does what because they kind of blew through it quickly all at once at the beginning, kind of like in the first Suicide Squad movie.
