Silence in the Library

Warning: Spoilers
Focus almost totally on Callum in this one, as his mission to the great Bookery reaches it's destination. There's some great little delights in the unsettling nature of the city around it. The librarian girls delight at being back in the place.

And a flashback to earlier episodes that makes you realise how long it's been since the first three series.

One of the greatest things about this show for me is Amaya's facial expressions. The animation is always amazing. Even more amazing though is the last act of this one, a fight for survival that has tension and jeopardy galore. Anything that can make you really think they might kill someone off is doing it's job. The ending works. Thanks to some great set up. Could perhaps have been better shown than said. But even so, this is an amazing episode for the quality of that last act.

Easily the Worst Written Episode Thus Far

Warning: Spoilers
This episode suffers from the contrived writing that plagued season 4 and 5 to an almost comical degree. Glaring plot holes remove any sense of urgency the show poorly attempts to establish. The domino's haphazardly set up in the season premiere culminate in probably the most infuriating decision the writers have made thus far.

Why did Rayla feel the need to tell Callum that her parents were trapped in that particular moment? Why in God's name did she not tell Callum, her MAGE BOYFRIEND, as soon as they came into her possession? It's one thing to keep someone in the dark to protect them, but sharing that information with Callum couldn't possibly put him in danger in any way. In fact, if Rayla had chosen LITERTALLY ANY other moment to clue him in, Callum would have been in infinitely less danger. Amaya and Corvus wouldn't have been stranded, and more importantly, the Queen of the goddamn Dragons wouldn't have been tainted by Arravos' influence. Due to Rayla's unfathomably poor timing, the most powerful ally they had is now on the enemy's side!

Rayla isn't the only victim of the poorly thought out plot progression in this episode, however; rather than waiting a mere 12 hours for the evil plage-ridden creatures to leave again, Callum inexplicably decides that he needs the scroll at that exact moment. Is it because he wanted to return them to their bodies as soon as possible? Did he possibly foresee that the coming mission wouldn't be possible without their help? Could there be another reason that we weren't privy to that drove Callum to grab the scroll as soon as humanly possible? NOPE! They do absolutely nothing with the scroll once it's in their possession, making Zubeia's sacrifice completely pointless. The writers clearly felt they could only pull the Deus Ex Machina card so many times, so they wrote her out in the hokiest way they could conceive of. Now, their flying ride is out of commission until further notice, turning what could have been a brief overnight break into a multi-episode journey. Nice going, Callum!!!!1!1!!!

Just fire the writers and burn all their scripts at this point. Every single character is reaching early Soren levels of idiocy and ineptitude, and not in an amusing way. This episode leaves a very sour taste in my mouth and gives me absolutely no hope that later seasons will be any better.
