Konosuba: An Explosion in this Wonderful World
Tweekums27 June 2023
This series is a prequel to 'KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!'. It is centred on Megumin, the wielder of explosion magic. Although at the start of this she has yet to learn it. After being rescued from a monster by a user of explosion magic she determines to learn it despite it being considered dangerous and of little practical use as it can only be used once per day. In the early part of the series she is learning magic and as things progress she gets to use her power against various monsters.

If you watched the original KonoSuba you'll want to watch this. Megumin is a fun central character and her adventures are enjoyable. The secondary characters are good too. There is a good amount of action; it tends to be fun rather than intense, but that suits this series. The animation and designs, which match the original series, are good. Overall a fun series that will obviously appeal to fans of the original but can also be enjoyed by new viewers.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

As expected

Spin-off the most famous konosuba, this time we follow the steps of a young Megumin trying to grow and to integrate with her peers with mixed to no results.

The character is clearly the best of Konosuba so can imagine why they decided to make her story.

Compared to the main series we have here more or less removed fan service so a major plus.

From my perspective, the main limitation is that it is more like a "prequel" directly connected to the main, so although you don't know the various scenes in advancve, the closer you get to the end the more you have the feeling to know already what will happen. I watched it after main series and legend of Crimson, if you want to enjoy I suggest you to watch 1-This prequel 2-Main series and 3-Legend of crimson (which is a great conclusion).

A fun short prequel for Konosuba.

Only Konosuba could've done a prequel series like this and had it work, but even then it BARELY works. If not for the strong, fun, and interesting characters this show focuses on, it would've felt like a bloated drag. The story here feels like it was supposed to be a movie, but parts were stretched to fill out 12 episodes. All that said, I really like Megumin and a show exploring her origin worked for me. The supporting cast was also mostly good, but the first half cast was stronger than the second half in my opinion. The classic Konosuba humor is still present here, but in an understandably lesser degree due to the absence of the whole main cast. I would recommend you watch this show first before Konosuba, as I think its fits well there and I feel that's what they intended for it. But if you have already seen the original show, watching this after will most likely only add to your love for the world.

A very good spinoff that expands on the lore of the main show
charizardeva8 August 2023
This show mainly focuses on Megumin's journey before she met Kazuma and the rest of her party. So it is to be expected that the show isn't the same in terms of tone as the main series but it more than makes up for it by showing us the backstory of Megumin and Yunyun as well as expanding on their dynamic even further.

Megumin's journey is very interesting and the situations she finds herself in are downright hilarious, along with the great antagonists she meets along the way who also feel like fresh characters as a whole.

A must watch for fans of the series as this title is filled to the brim with little easter eggs related to the main series along with some genuinely epic and emotional moments.

Hilarious and amazing

Warning: Spoilers
Ever wondered how Megumin joined Kazuma or what her life was like before she joined Kazuma's team, well this anime has the answers and yes we get to see YunYun, Wiz and some other characters that are references to the Konosuba series and her life before is also hilarious, it is about her learning one spell and that is the legendary EXPLOSION spell that she witnessed an adventurer used back when she was a kid and saw an adventurer save her from monsters, we also got to see YunYun too and I mean more of YunYun as we didn't see her a lot and there are hilarious scenes too, would recommend watching Konosuba before this to get the character references though.

Love the funny moments

Warning: Spoilers
I have watched both anime and manga, even tough many scenes I still really like, it was well animated, and also I love the amount of references in the show also the extras, the main extras i'll say were mostly Komekko and Yunyun, (Cecily wasnt that important) Yunyun by its side also close to Megumin and controling her, while Komekko doing things that I found real funny such as the way she calls Host by a goblin or her attitufe towars her sister, but I'll have like more that they animated some parts, such as in the manga when Komekko is carrying Megumin after she did her explosion, a little scene happens, I'd love to see thst animated, anyways a great show.

Megumin doesn't work as a protagonist.

Favorite Episode: Prelude to an Explosion of Madness

Megumin as a character doesn't work as a series protagonist. Her character just isn't interesting or funny enough to make the series worthwhile. Her character boils down to "I'm not like the other wizards". Also, the show repeats plot points we already knew from Konosuba (we already knew why Megumin uses explosion magic, and the Crimson Demon's origins, and why Yunyun is attached to Megumin, and that the Axis cult is insane, etc). The best part of this series was when Kazuma and Aqua showed up. The main trio of Konosuba complements each other, and their dynamics are what make Konosuba worthwhile. Isolating one doesn't make for an entertaining watch.
