This is Midge's World
ossie8517 April 2023
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel rarely fails to amaze us with its humor, wit, and brilliant storytelling, and the latest episode "It's a Man, Man, Man, Man World" is no exception. The episode takes us to a new setting with Midge working as a writer, and it's refreshing to see her in a new role. The episode also showcases some hilarious moments with Midge's father, Abe, who, as always, steals the show with his quirkiness and dry sense of humor.

What intrigued me the most about this episode were the flashforwards, which reveal a glimpse of what's to come in Midge's future. These flashforwards add a new layer of intrigue, making us wonder what path Midge will ultimately take, and whether she will ever truly find what she's looking for.

The Title Tells It All

Midge starts her new job on the Ford show. He is supported by a cadre of middle aged comedy writers who basically have tired jokes. Since he is on nightly, they have to come up with monologue material for him and he is a harsh critic. Midge walks in on their planning session and is not welcomed. They see her as an impediment. This is going to be ongoing, considering the time period. The strength of the show is her ability to be vulnerable but determined. It takes her time to be critical and judge the works of others. They don't respect her jokes, even when they are funnier than some of theirs. There are some funny bits with Abe interviewing a woman of the theater who puts some moves on him. This is one of the best shows ever and the dialogue is great in this one. I'm not a clothes person, by any means, but I have to say she sparkles whenever she is on the screen. I'll be sad when this show doesn't continue. Oh, the beginning where she is interviewed for 60 Minutes. Is this a put on?

Do you see what I see?

We've enjoyed the originality of this show from the beginning but we're not sure we'll last through this final season. The first season was quirky and fresh and the fondness for the era was clear, cleverly treated. Through the seasons not all the story lines or scenes worked. Now they're clearly throwing things at the wall and shooting it whether it works or not. Plausibility is out the window. The characters have become caricatures, writing is on steroids, and sets and fashions are so exaggerated that they're distracting. The high ratings for the first two episodes this final season indicates to me that people have largely lost their critical thinking skills.
