What A Beginning
rutvikpsutar16 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When the film started to be honest I was not able to catch up or grasp the amount of information in the beginning, that you were trying to portray or showcase, but eventually when the story started to unfold itself, then the magic started happening.

I was hooked totally on the screenplay, I mean I have several questions about the film, like how you ended up creating the whole film in split screen, what were your initial thoughts and how were you able to manage the volume of information without even neglecting the single frame. And the genre you were catering to was hard enough to pull that off.

The first half was a bit slow and felt like a drag but the film demanded that pace so it was ok (but could have been better) because it was establishing the narrative and the overall environment that's gonna play important role in the second half. After a point, I forgot that I'm watching a split movie I was able to catch up with the emotions, the dialogues were so simple yet humorous (in the subtitle). The editing was finely chopped and certain cuts were very crucial to the film if done incorrectly then the whole narrative and the perspective would have changed but you managed to balance it out quite nicely.

There was constant tension in the scenes, which is very hard to maintain but you managed it quite perfectly, the audience was feeling in the room itself. Feeling for both the characters, it was a whole roller coaster ride of emotions, humor, human behavior, sadness, and whatnot. I don't know the name of the actor who portrays the character of an autistic boy, but man he just nailed it in every manner, the body language, and the stuttering was on point, and able to pull off the role nicely. He was in character throughout the film which is very hard to maintain but that man has just nailed in every possible way, the lines which were written for him were suiting him nicely. Well done balsubramnii....

Kudos to the Technical Team, they have not only upscaled the film but also built a whole environment and virtual space where no one wants to leave. I love the cinematography as I said earlier I forgot that I'm watching a movie that is split in half throughout because it was so engaging and yet simple which is why everybody was able to relate or connect through the lens. I also like the color pallet of the film which was not only setting the tone of the film but also reminds us that were in a closed room, The color was nicely done and managed throughout the film. The sound department was spot on in terms of the ambiance the SFX and the foleys were very clean and suited the tone of the room, even the small rustle was clearly audible and contributing to the screenplay and moving it forward. Now comes the Background Score, I must say I like the overall treatment of the Background Score and it was perfectly fitting for the movie. As a composer myself I was able to relate to most of the treatment while watching I also thought If I had a chance to score this movie my approach will be different but the end goal will be similar. The use of folk drums and the continued use of ambient elements were creating suspense and anxiety as it was moved forward, the rape scene Oh god it was super intense but the background score never overpowered the scene, it was so disturbing, but the score was helped it to be more disturbed, the scene was Balsubramani was sleeping and Nithya was constantly trying his phone, but he got fits and he tension was not resolving at all even adding up on layer one by one. The sound selection was very precise and complemented the storyline not overpowering the visuals but also giving the space to evolve. Well Done KS Sudhamurty sir.

Last but not least Gouri Kishan sorry for my mistake Nithya, yaar what a performance she gave on the screen, I'm one her admirer of her work since 96, and her small facial expression reaction, her smile or even her reaction to a certain situation is very unique, her small glance make a big difference in the screen. And if you ask me about this particular film she has done a phenomenal job, as an audience able to feel her struggle personally, we were able to feel her helplessness, When the kidnappers came in the room we were trying to tell her while sitting in the theater," hey they have arrived, hide the phone pls pls". It is so rare when you try to communicate with a fictional character from the screen, so it's a big accomplishment of the director and the actor when her emotions and act are comprehending the audience this deeply.

Last my final thought would be everyone should watch this film in the theater (I don't know whether the movie has been released or not) and every Filmmaker should watch this and experience what collaborative works look like and what happens if everyone contributes their best to one film then this type of product comes out and shines through every festivals and movie theater.
