Germans aren't funny - except when they are
dietaube3 October 2018
Normally I really despise German comedy, especially when they try to imitate American humour. But this show embraces German unfunnyness and makes it very hilarious. No obvious jokes but more subtle between the lines humour. Every episode tackles a sensitive topic from a very different and opposite point of view, which makes you think about it in a new way yourself. All actors are character actors them self and Bjarne Mädel is totally lovable as simple but goodhearted cleaning staff. If you expect over the top "I slipped on a banana and that's very funny" jokes, you won't be enjoying this show. BUT if you enjoy subtle between the line jokes and high quality dialogues, please watch it and you won't regret it!

Comedy into philosophy
imedajinsokt19 January 2016
I'm usually a bit put off by philosophy in the guise of comedy, or most movies for that matter (e.g., that god-awful one from Germany years ago, about angels descending into taverns to bloviate to customers). But "Crime Scene Cleaner" does it adroitly and, IMHO, hilariously.

What puzzles me, however, are the two scathing negatives from German posters. I admit I don't know Mr. Madel's previous roles so I can't say whether he just cuts and pastes his performances here. But to say that CSC "sucks" in comparison to what's on American TV is a gobsmacker. If the poster could direct me to the U.S. sitcom that's crisply dialogued and nicely played by the supporting actors, and which is pitched as high, I'll watch it in a trice!

Funny as hell
Jan-Scheibler18 August 2015
Bjarne Mädel displays his acting abilities once again, yet this time he'S not playing a man child like he did in Strommberg. This time he's the every-man with a rather unusual job. He's the one who get's paid for cleaning up crime scenes. However it ain't the cleaning that's entertaining , it's the people with whom he gotta deal while cleaning up. Nazis,Vegans,Murderer,Reality TV Stars,Shaman Priests, just to name a few. The jokes are sometimes on him, and sometimes on the person that he encounters. Right now "Crime Scene Cleaner"(or Der Tatortreiniger" in German)is one of the few good German productions on television. other memorable German TV shows are:"Circus Haligali" and "Walulis Sieht fern"

This Show Is Totally Awesome
LauraAnnG30 December 2014
I have only seen three episodes so far (thank you MHz International Mystery channel, and also Comcast for carrying it!), but I can tell you right now that this show totally, absolutely, brilliantly, rocks.

Crime Scene Cleaner is one of the funniest things I have ever watched. EVER. Bjarne Mädel, who plays our "hero" is brilliant. The writing, even as translated into English, is hysterically funny. The show is simply jaw-dropping, mind-numbing, amazing. It is surreal, bizarre, somewhat existential and laugh-out-loud-at-your-TV funny.

It's about a man (Heiko 'Schotty' Schotte) whose job it is to clean up the horrid leftovers after a terrible crime has taken place -- for example the leavings of a murder or a suicide. His motto is "My work starts where others pass in horror," (which can be interpreted in several ways). During the course of his job he meets, let us say, some extremely strange people.... a sweet old lady obsessed with her sofa (who maybe isn't as sweet as she seems), a grumpy writer whose dead aunt didn't help his writer's block, and a charming, dedicated, prostitute.

Schotty is a decent bloke. A sort of Everyman. He's kind and honest. He turns on the TV to watch soccer at one crime scene (but feels bad when his boss catches him at it), and at another crime scene when offered a bribe, he turns it down. He's likable, kind of cute, and goodhearted.

I am told Crime Scene Cleaner is incredibly popular in Germany. I am not surprised. It is really fun to watch. The episodes are less than 30 minutes and they go by so fast, you're left wishing for more. (Incidentally, don't turn it off before the credits end).

There are a lot of in-jokes to be found here -- for example, Schotty's ringtone is the theme for Germany's (if not the planet's) longest running crime series ("Tatort"). Characters show up from other German crime shows and make fun of themselves.

The writers are not adverse to making political statements of the progressive kind. The shrewd adeptness of these proclamations just adds to the brilliance of the show.

Der Tatortreiniger is perfect. Simply perfect. Watch it if you can.

And MHz Worldview International Mystery -- thank you so much for all you do! Please show as many Crime Scene Cleaner episodes as possible!

Finally a creative German production
blumdeluxe16 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Der Tatortreiniger" tells the story of Heiko Schotte, who cleans up crime scenes and his encounters with the most different people and ideas of life.

The series takes a German working class hero, somewhere inbetween proletic stereotype and understanding/caring guy and confronts him with people whose ideas of life are quite different from his own. Through clever dialogues and the brilliant acting of Mädel, comedy develops from this simple confrontation that is both disarming in its honesty and its understanding for the depicted characters. It shows the weaknesses of any ideology through a lead character that is anything but the typical role model himself. I really enjoyed every single episode of the show and something will be missing now that it is finished.

All in all this finally is a glance of hope and creativity in the German tv-series sector. It is both simple and amazing in its very own way.

If you get a chance, watch it...

German TV productions are usually meh at best. Sure, there was Heimat or Berlin Alexanderplatz, but mostly they suffer from small budgets and even smaller ambition. Crime Scene Cleaner is the rare exception from the rule, a real gem of unhurried and intelligent comedy. And more importantly, it is original. Not some knock-off, stuff you've seen before. The format allows it to be great in spite of a most likely abysmally small budget.

So far you are stuck with Canal+ in France and Network MHZ in the US, to actually see the show. Which is more than you can say for most German TV, but sadly the show is far from readily available. But it certainly worth the 30 day trial of MHZ streaming service.

Give it a try, you will not regret it...

Consistently brilliant and hilarious
massa-29 January 2015
I'll just endorse Laura's excellent review above and keep this very short.

Der Tatortreiniger is outstanding -- a seriously funny series with plots that are a wonderful combination of the surreal and the mundane and writing that is breathtakingly clever. Bjarne Madel and the guest actors in each episode deliver the rapid-fire lines with perfect throw-away understatement.

It's rare to find myself laughing out loud almost all the way through any show, let alone each one in a series. What a treat! Thank you MHz indeed. Can't wait for the DVD release.

Excellent
richpl10 June 2017
CSC recently appeared on our local PBS station via MHz. I have only seen 5 shows, from 2013 so far. But they are great.

US network shows are some of the worst but gems such as 'NCIS' stand out along with British 'Sherlock'. CSC stands right up there alongside them.

I wish German had trickled down from my parents, but I am stuck with the sub-titles. Even with this obstacle, the show does get the viewer totally involved.

We Germans love it
fromentum-907436 October 2017
Shame on you, Thorsten and Thelonius, for you are thoroughly wrong claims about Mädel and the show. Firstly, Mädel plays so well I had a hard time recognizing him lately in Wellness for couples (not that great a film btw), so completely did he alter everything down to his way to walk, secondly, the stories are mostly absurdly brilliant in their convention-questioning attitude. Ravished, I showed them to friends who were equally delighted. Not that siding with a critical minority was a bad thing, but you are so mistaken here.

The characters are unforgettable
theotherblonde24 February 2019
This is a character driven sitcom. Might be too much dialog for some people. I like it a lot. The humour is quirky and subtle. Whether Schotty is dancing in a bunny costume for extra cash, getting back some Nazi bullies or stuck in a magicians chest with a gay man talking about their hopes and dreams , there is never a dull moment.

Little (funny!) morality plays
burtnyk-260-98189210 March 2019
Found this on MHZ a couple of years ago and was immediately enamored with it. Laugh out loud surprise moments are my favorites here, those times when out of nowhere, something absurd will happen, often something shocking or even terrible, but within the context of the plot, truly funny (the show gives us permission to laugh at these absurd moments, despite the often tragic circumstances preceding them). When that happens, I'm glad the show is subtitled so I don't miss the dialogue that's occurring when I'm laughing. I really started to appreciate it after about 3 or 4 episodes, at which point I realized that one is really a little morality play. But its morality is not foist upon you, Instead, it draws you in, dipping its toe into the human condition with humor, and along the way invites the viewer to do the same. The shows often end abruptly, but the result is that the 'moral' center of the episode sticks with you. It brings you to the point where you really start thinking about the particular topic of the day, and then it leaves you there. I.e., It doesn't finish the thinking for you. It explores some often compelling moral and philosophical issues, and the diversity of human beings, with humor and, importantly, compassion. That balance makes it and its stories accessible and not "preachy". I hope MHZ shows more recent episodes (the last 2 I watched were from 2014) because I'm really curious to see how the show evolves.

Most of the times very good
xones-1646419 April 2016
The show is very good. Most of the times.

Some episodes are better than others but the writer has a brilliant mind with a dry and dark humor.

This is not so often to get from women writers. I was surprised that the scripts were written by one person. There are so much bizarre situations and pointy dialogues that I thought that have to be a team.

The acting is good and some of the guests for example Viviane de Muynck in Tauschgeschäfte do outstanding work. It seems to me that they saw a chance for an impressive performance and used it.

The directing is not much to mention. And it looks like the show has not much money. But that is not important because the best thing is the good writing.

Very German seems to me that the show has to go a long way to get to its right place in the public. It seems to be hidden in the corner of the NDR. As someone said correctly. There ore not much funny shows in Germany.

A total let-down
theolonius9 March 2015
First of all, I must say I was rating this show one point below it's actual quality because of the ridiculous hype and the massive disappointment that came with that.

Anyhow, despite it's premise (one which we have actually seen in various movies since the 80s) this show could have been awesome but failed due to the terrible scripts and the wooden, repetitive acting.

Unless you are totally new to storytelling and/or television, you will never meet an interesting character. The authors are seemingly either new to scriptwriting or such old hands in German television that they don't even know how to try to be REALLY original.

Having Feldhusen and Mädel on this is what got me interested in the first place. Their work on the German Office-Adaptation was remarkable as they did manage to bring a fresh momentum on the 100th remake of an original show. Though it took a lawsuit to make Feldhusen admit it was an adaptation :D But after all, "Stromberg" was somewhat different and entertaining, no matter if it was another rip-off of the British cult-series.

This time, they sadly failed. Feldhusen as a Director can't bring anything to it. The people don't seemed inspired or pushed or led to a great performance, the very least you'd expect by a Director. The narrative, the camera-work, the whole setting, it's all dull an not worth mentioning.

What is remarkable: This show proves that Mädel actually can't act. His character, "Schotty", is played exactly like "Ernie" from Stromberg. The same expressions, intonations and gestures, despite it being a completely different role. If it wasn't for the beard, you couldn't tell the characters apart.

Summed up, what I was hoping to be a breakthrough in the national TV-landscape ended up as a complete and disgraceful failure.

Possibly the best finale in TV history
rising-down13 April 2020
I won't spoil it. But this series is a light hearted black comedy from start to finish with the most amazing and baffling series finale I've ever seen. The series runs for 7 seasons, but it only totals 31 episodes with an ave running time of 30 mins each. So easy binge watching right here. While the episodes are not connected to each other, you do want to pay attention to every detail as it will all come down in the last episode. Bjarne Mädel (that goofy gangster from "How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)") is at his prime. It mostly depicts (northern) German dry humor (which does exists) and sure is the go-to series you want to know and brag about at the next party.

Expect it to be entertaining and fascinating...
mattia-960567 February 2023
"Der Tatortreiniger" is definitely one of the most interesting and fascinating shows I have ever seen and with a rating of 8.5/10 it is still underrated. When I read the reviews here on IMDB, people were often just talking about the comedy factor of this show, but I love this show primarily because it is so entertaining. Is it funny? Undoubtedly. But that is not where the show focuses on.

With almost every episode you get to see a completely new facet of society and humankind. The extremely well played protagonist "Heiko Schotte" here by represents the viewers perspective ,as average middle class citizen, exploring the entirely new world shown every crime scene. This is where the show shines at: Presenting us the inherent different lifes of mankind in an unbelievably interesting and easy watchable way for us as audience. Through that the series often arises philosophical, political and morality questions without ever answering these utterly and leaving the viewer, who just gained a new perspective on life, fascinated and pondering. The very relatable comedy mostly comes up when "Schotty's" is been confronted and perplexed with and by the new topic presented in the episode.

As an anthology series you can always jump right into it and will be (almost ever time) fantastically entertained. Ultimately I think it is one of the best shows ever created and if I could give half stars I would rate it 9.5 out of 10.

Sensible Guy vs Monomaniacs
csdcsdcsd200326 May 2022
Schotty the crime scene cleaner is a lovable, hard-working good guy who enjoys dating, sausage, coffee breaks, beer, hanging out with sports-loving friends - and plenty of good debates. On the job, he runs into a wide variety of extreme thinkers who stimulate his little gray cells to the max. While making other people's messes spotless with his enzymes, mops, brushes and energetic elbow grease, he patiently applies his straightforward logic to those of argumentitive people in all sorts of circumstances. I don't consider the show funny, per se, but more thought-provoking than most TV, like well-written short plays that push one's thinking into high gear. I watched the entire series on MHz and in my opinion it got better and better as it neared the conclusion. Schotty's work takes him all over Hamburg where he encounters, among many others, an old friend in a mansion who has made millions but still owes Schotty the start-up money, a vegan, a prostitute, a down and out clown, a secret Hitler fan club, an alluring female android who bats her mechanical eyelashes at him, a pregnant innkeeper planning to give birth at home, a few murderers lingering after police have left the scene, customers of businesses closed down due to messy deaths on the premises, a know-it-all consultant who badgers Schotty into enlarging rather than removing blood stains while speedily answering complex math questions - the list goes on. The writing, acting, sets and filming all work together beautifully. I love the zippy theme song and opening credits showing Schotty driving to his new assignment in his well-stocked cleaning truck adorned with air fresheners and a plastic hula girl I'll miss him. Highly recommended.

An amazing mash-up of philosophy, politics, and comedy.
giuleice29 December 2022
The humor is dark, but (mostly) light hearted. Even though I usually don't enjoy dark humor, the jokes in this show are under my personal boundary and even I find it's absolutely well made and funny.

The gore is moderate and not very explicit, but that varies from episode to episode. The only thing that costed the one star to the ten, is the camera-settings who are a bit meh sometimes, and a few scenes who took a bit too long. But that's nothing wich reduced my enjoyment for the show.

It perfectly shows that German productions do not have to be bad, and can be absolutely hilarious and well made, too.

I would absolutely recommend it!

Well cast, the lead, & each epidode. Well written, directed, a woman with womans sensibilties, strong; kudoes to rhe show runner I put this with all time favs: Faulty Towers, Absolutely Fabulous, Baskets, 10s.

One of the best German TV shows!
jakobkettner14 July 2023
Der Tatortreiniger takes parts of "Kammerspiele" (studio theatre) and links them with philosophical humor. Most of the episodes pursue different plots which helps the show not to lose its drive. Though, in the latter seasons, there were some episodes with kind of slumps.

But, with Bjarne Mädel, those episodes still have one of the currently best German TV actors as protagonist who really gives them his own touch. If you understand German, please watch the show in German. You would miss out on such incredible acting, if not.

To round it up, the series has one of the best endings (it's no finale, just an ending!) I have ever seen in a TV show.

Disappointing
torstenscholz8714 May 2015
This series was very successful in Germany and got mostly sparkling reviews from audiences, TV critics and feuilletons all over. Why? Just why? If this is the best and funniest thing German TV has produced in decades, as many people claim it to be, it's just another sad proof that German TV and especially German comedy of nowadays absolutely sucks and is still light years away from the quality of US-American, British or Northern European TV. The scripts and "jokes" are awfully unfunny, outdated and unoriginal and might have been fresh and innovative in the early 80s. The acting is dull, and overall there is just nothing really new or witty to it. This is a shame because we Germans actually have some great comedians that prove that we actually can be very funny. If you want to see some really good German Comedy, you should rather watch the output of people like Loriot, Otto, Hape Kerkeling, Helmut Dietl, Familie Heinz Becker or Gerhard Polt.

Funny Germans who knew
braquecubism26 January 2024
The more you watch the funnier, the more brilliant and it's satisfying. The lead is "perfect" while perfection is by definition unachievable. Casting g of this actor is great. The episode about Nazis is Priceless & satisfying at the end. Each has a unique perspective. The lead us a Philosopher King going among the public.

Mhz Choice has 3 seasons if there are 6 please please Really surprising that German, Also Homicide Hills, & Austria, Walking on Sunshine, the best comedies.

FYI I found Ghosts UK very entertaining, US not as good, but still worth watching. US best Baskets now on HUL. Best overlooked, Harlots, UK, Banished UK AU, Outlander US. Schits Creek, started watching b4 the attention. Catherine the 4 leads, brilliant.

I don't get it.....
subwayco-5220530 May 2018
I find the main character to be very, very annoying. Is he doing slapstick or what are his mannerisms related too? He comes off like one partner in a two person comedy. He's like Laurel without the Hardy or Jerry Lewis without Dean Martin. In France, Jerry Louis was treated and awarded like he was a comedic genius. Horrible, terrible are some of the words I would use to describe him. Definitely NOT funny! I thought there would be tons more negative comments like mine. Why it's a hit with German fans is baffling to me? I love German people and I hope some of them agree with me. I watch DW news to get the real news from outside the U.S. I hope Brent Goff agrees with me on crime scene cleaner I watch Euromaxx to see the latest in design, technology and vacation video's. With so many show's like Manara, Montalbano, a French Village, Tatort, Commissario Brunetti and my new favorite Marie's Mind for Murder !

Thanks for reading my comment and any reply would be welcome!

It started very unique, but it went into the wrong direction
harunbajric-882453 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When I started with the first season of "Tatortreiniger", it felt really unique and interesting. There was Heiko Schotte, a guy from northern germany who is working as a crime scene cleaner. He had a wide knowledge around cleaning supplies and chemistry, and this was what made this show so unique to me.

The first season went really entertaining as a whole, but after a while, Heiko turned more into a therapist instead of a crime scene cleaner. Some characters from the newer seasons became really annoying, and the main plot was based around their personal problems, instead of the crime scene. And Heiko's story seemed also really repetitive to me. His persona is a guy in his 40s, who likes playing soccer with his friend, who is open for a relationship but still can't get over his big love, a woman called Merle. It feels like these two details are getting mentioned ine every episode at least once.

And this is like the point, where this show is getting weak for me. They had so much potential, to create a character with a "uncommon" job, who is cleaning some crime scenes, around people who are really kinda involved with it. But it went completely in an other way.

I guess in some episodes, they tried to play with "surreality" which brought a little bit more action into the plot.

The humor didn't caught me aswell and I was hoping for something that's more entertaining.
