Nice idea, but too simplistic delivery
bob the moo2 July 2016
I travel a lot for my work; okay rarely staying in 5* hotels but usually in very small guest houses in the middle of nowhere, or in average chains. So to me, the idea that a bed can tell a story of the previous occupants is both something I am all too aware of, but also something I prefer not to think about. That is the concept here though as the short film plays out a direct interview with a hotel bed, who then tells a story of some connected occupants.

The idea here is a decent one, and it does have a nicely comedic air to it all, but it just doesn't come together. The main problem is the way the story folds together. It has sections which relate to each other, and each section is told simply to then connect to the next; there is a goal at the end, which sees a neat circular bit of writing, but this approach has downsides. The first is that the punch line can be seen coming from about a minute before (indeed the bed himself tells us of it), but the bigger issue is that it isn't actually funny during the film itself. It presents itself like it should be funny, but it isn't. So, in the end it is a nice idea, with so-so delivery that leads to a decent punch-line (albeit undercut by the delivery).
