Wholly superficial and a bit obvious – although will work for those romantics poised for a fix

A boy makes a move on a cute girl working in a coffee shop; his lack of creativity sees her give him a playful rebuttal, which he seems to take to heart when he leaves the shop. Finishing her shift later than day though, the girl finds that the boy had not totally given up.

In case the nice bright colors, sweet but non-threatening music, simple structure, and cute people do not tell you what to expect, the use of the title and the note device both confirm that we are in cutesy-romance territory. The plot is little more than a scavenger hunt which kicks off after a cute girl turns up at a coffee shop. The resulting film is indeed cute, and I guess for incurable romantics then it is probably good enough at this to carry you along for 10 minutes. The problem is that it really doesn't do anything else other than play this cute card in every single regard. Those waiting for a flourish of creativity or wit will be disappointed since the film does play a pretty straight bat throughout.

This is not to say that it doesn't deserve credit for knowing what it wants to do and then doing it, but just that it lacks a certain spark that this type of material often needs – and in this case it does feel like cutesy filmmaking 101. The casting of Myhill is part of that – of course she is stunning and the film gives her an effortlessness air which will draw the viewer to her in the way the film needs, however she remains very superficial, with her glances, her slightly parted lips and many other playful devices that work, but are wholly on the surface. And her performance matches the film, because the surface is the only place it aims to be – and even then it is pretty obvious about it. For sure those romantics sitting poised to say "aww" will love it, but it is too one-note for an audience broader than that.
