Development Day

It was always difficult to start another school year. Everything was uncertain. You were afraid whether or not your friends had forgotten all about you; you were afraid that you wouldn't be able to follow along with the new learning. There were a lot of things to think about. However, I never really thought about how difficult it must have been for the teachers, so I'm glad that there's a show like "Abbott Elementary" that can tell me a little bit about that specific part. And this episode did that in wonderful fashion, with a lot of its usual humor and some great emotional moments.

There is a great relatability to this show for everyone. As someone who is still pretty close to my time in school, it's pretty easy to relate to the journey of the students. However, as someone who is also in my adulthood now, it's also very easy to relate to the teachers' problems. This episode deals with a lot of the fallout from the last season's finale, with Janine desperately trying to convince herself that she's good and over her break-up. However, as the episode rolls along, it becomes pretty clear that she is anything but okay. And getting under the skin of someone who is always very happy and up-beat is the exact reason to watch this show. It shows that everyone has some things that they don't want to show. However, Janine is clearly someone who needs all the help she can get, and the other characters around her are willing to help, which is what makes this ensemble so great. That's the emotional hook of the entire show. And it also goes to the comedic moments.. All the humor in this episode has some kind of emotional payoff to it at the end and that's why this show is a particularly successful one. Quinta Brunson is a great writer and her work on this episode may be the best she has offered the show so far. She knows these characters so well and gives all of them some time to shine; as small as those moments may be, they're all very memorable.

"Development Day" was the episode that I needed from this show, showing the hardships that the teachers go through right before school starts again. It's a typically emotional episode that all serves the characters and with humor that serves the emotionality of it, definitely making this one of the clear highlight episodes of the show.
