If life were only moments....
boblipton2 August 2010
A bearded, worn-out bum is deposited in front of a shop window and proceeds to watch scenes of his lost life in this six-minute, dialogue-free film by the director of 3x3.

Executed with equal skill, this piece attempts to do more than offer a funny anecdote. Unfortunately, its sentimental theme of redemption by conspiracy is telegraphed early on.

Nonetheless, its short length makes that inevitable outcome bearable, and certainly, the performance by the lead is excellent as an example of filmed close-up acting. Overall the production is impeccable in execution with some fine camera-work by first-time cinematographer Pedro Negrão.

Thought provoking short film.

I stumbled across this video as a user had posted it to YouTube and accompanied a music score alongside. The YouTube version had been cut to 5:15, to match the music length. This music matched the story perfectly which enticed me to find the original film wondering what could possibly be missed.

Whilst on watching, it does lead the viewer to ask significantly even more questions than when you first start watching, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It opens your eyes to the "it could happen to anyone".

At a crucial stage it hits a crossroad, but it moves a direction which hits the heart strings.

It is beautifully filmed, the main actor draws you into the short story and the mystery of the other characters only help you concentrate on the main character and his outcome.

Moments without explanations

Warning: Spoilers
"Momentos" is a 7-minute movie by Portuguese writer and director Nuno Rocha. It was his second work and he made it 6 years ago. It is about a homeless man, who witness the past when he was still happy and together with his family. And quickly afterward, he is reunited with them. The action is pretty obvious, but the "why" is not. What is going on with the other homeless? Why was he seen early on on the screen himself? Why didn't he reunite with his family earlier. Apparently, 20 years or so passed between the video and the now. Who is the guy in the car? Is this some family reunion television show that films it all? I personally felt that this film was intended to evoke emotion in the audience, but it did not offer enough realism and explanations to make sense between trying to be touching and this is the reason why it felt like pure bait to me with not enough substance. Good thing about it is you don't need any subtitles as the characters communicate only non-verbally. But I still don't recommend this film. Thumbs down.
