The show is back with the Monster of the week theme, this time it's the Goddess of truth giving us a very important lesson "When you ask for the truth you better be strong enough to handle it". After "Live free or twihard" Dean is distrusting his little brother, he thinks Sam is Lucifer, he can't trust working with him on a case or even being in the same room with him (so sad the brotherly relationship has gotten the bad especially when it was stronger than ever on the end of season five, but I'm still waiting for them to fix things up) Dean asks for Castiel's help but with no answer so he calls Bobby to figure out what's wrong with the younger Winchester! However Bobby gives Dean the worst case scenario "May be it's just Sam" (We can see on Dean's face how much he dreaded this idea, he was more willing to believe that Sam was a monster than this cold uncaring creature he has been lately) However later, like Bobby phrased it "Why is it like half the time you clean up a mess, you end up dirty" (You are very right on that Bobby) Dean gets cursed in his quest for the truth, and he naturally decides to use that curse to get the truth from Sam. (Not to mention some funny confessions thrown in his way, but mostly the hilarious Bobby confession about watching Tori & Dean and enjoys a pedicure every now and then, But It was cute that Bobby told Dean that he is his favourite, Thank you Bobby as Dean needed to hear that even it was unintentional) Dean goes to Sam for the truth but first he gets a call from Lisa who is still angry with him for shoving her son and demands some explanation which Dean fails to provide, She goes on telling Dean that his relation with Sam is unhealthy and that he will never be happy as long as he is in his life. (I strongly disagree with you Lisa, The Sam/Dean relationship is what keeps them going, alive and sane, they grew up depending on each other and their mutual love is practically what saved the world before, plus Dean was obviously not happy when Sam was away) Hurt as He can be by her words, he is faced with yet another shocking revelation when he realized that Sam is indeed Sam and that he is not Lucifer.
The brothers go on to hunt the Veritas but when she knocked them out and they wake up tied up, She plays a game of truth on them, She goes for Dean first demanding to know his feelings about his brother, Dean's reply comes sad and heartbreaking as he says he is better now as he before wanted to kill him in his sleep but he realized that his brother is just acting like him and that he has learned that he is none but a killer not a family man and will never be. When she claims the truth from Sam he goes on lying to her face to frighten her enough to say that he is not human. However after the brothers free themselves and take her down, Dean holds a knife on his brother claiming to know what he is. Sam confesses that there is something wrong with him and that he is a better hunter that he ever was, but he can't feel anything and that he let his brother get turned because he knew there was a cure and that Dean could handle himself in the vampire nest, but he couldn't care to think about his own safety in case he drank human blood and ruin his chance for a cure, he admitted he needs help and that he doesn't know what's wrong. Dean shockingly embarks in a wave of rage hitting Sam bloody and knocking him into unconsciousness.
Some people are angry with the final scene, I'm shocked but I think it's justifiable enough, for Sam not only jeopardized his brother's life but he also ruined Dean's relationship with his new family and above all Dean with angry with Sam for turning into a version of himself, so I think Dean was pouring out all his anger with himself on Sam.
The episode ends with many questions lingering in my head: Does Sam really think he needs help? Is Sam happy with not feeling any thing because instead he will face the terrible outcomes of his time in Hell? Will Dean come to his brother's rescue and fix him?
