Really...?
cc-9620111 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm happy to watch cringe, not so great films but even I found myself questioning most of this film.

I'm writing this now, right after Milly bails on Billy on the night of the dance, to run to Archie and all I'm thinking is...why is it suddenly okay to ditch this poor guy, after chasing him around for ages and forcing herself into his life, on the night of his dance?

Just cr*ppy character writing all round, bizarre.

The comedy isn't as bad as some reviews suggest, and I suppose I could have turned it off sooner.

Also, Nick Frost is the chauffeur...in what universe does that make sense?????

Far less than the sum of its parts.
deliabattie7 April 2024
This film has such a good cast, actors from shows like Heartstopper, Bridgerton, The Big Bang Theory plus Nick Frost bumbling around is background for some unexplained reason. Is he the chauffeur? Why is Nick Frost the chauffeur? Has he done something wrong which means he can't be the star of a film anymore? In addition, the sets are stunning, the music is good, they clearly haven't penny punched while making this film. It's such a shame that the result is so much less than the sum of its parts. The result is a chaotic, rushed mess of a film with far too much breaking of the fourth wall and one of those relationships where you're supposed to believe two people are perfect for each other but they end up hurting each other because they can't be honest with each other. Honesty is the basis of a good relationship, I'm never going to root for a couple who only obstacle is their inability to tell each other they love one another.

Seen it 1,000,000 times
mariofernav22 April 2024
We have seen this movie 1,000,000 times, and i dont get why hollywood tries so hard to wanna make Tanner Buchanan into a super cool badass character, he clearly is not and it shows they try to hard every time in every movie.

And, dude, she knew the guy for 2 weeks , that made me roll my eyes in the secreat revealing part in the intercom.

Is not bad, its just a good sunday movie to put in the back while you scroll your phone and fold laundry.

Acting is nit bad, i laughed at the "you have an amazing bone structure line"

I also like how billy left her in thebdate and did not take her crap lol.

Yeah, this was a dissapointment.
blairt-067006 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Coming off Heartstopper, hearing that Sebastian Croft (who played one of the best villains in a teen show that I've seen) was the protagonist in this film was enough to win me over.

I am never making that mistake again.

First up: Archie (the protagonist) is a horrible person. The lengths he goes to trying to get Amelia to like him in this film are obsessive and incredibly toxic, and he really didn't deserve the happy ending he got. Croft is trying, but the script really drags him down. The titular Billy Walsh is a blank slate, and his lack of a costume change is noticable, the film makes it obvious he isn't going to be the end choice, killing any tension and interest in the plotline. Amelia is underdeveloped, and only really exists to be Archie's love interest.

The other thing I want to note: the comedy is terrible. 4th wall comedy can be amazing, but dear GOD is it terrible here. It's cheesy, and not in a campy or endearing way. It's just insufferable.

The 2 leads try to elevate the film, and Nick Frost and Masie Peters can do no wrong, but this film wasn't enjoyable in the slightest.

Good Enough
PennyReviews8 April 2024
'' How to Date Billy Walsh '' is a teenage romantic comedy.

The movie is fun, bringing in mind the rom coms of the 2000's, with some fun twists and a predictable yet enjoyable story.

And yes, there were some things that were over the top, but they were handled nicely in the end. The characters were also funny and sweet, with nice chemistry between the leads.

The settings also made it feel like a fairytale, even though they didn't take advantage of it to the fullest.

The ending was, finally, cute and a happy one.

So, overall, seven out of ten for the romantic comedy '' How to date Billy Walsh ''

Insulting my intelligence
matt_sole-372-20820322 April 2024
I really wanted to like this. The movie has a great cast and, to give them their due, the weakness isn't in the cast performance here, they do a great job with the dire material they have to work with.

There's nothing new or original about the story. It's a poor British attempt to replicate an American high school movie trope that has been told a thousand times. I'm unsure how you can remake a movie that has been made so many times before yet get it so wrong.

I get that the design of the film is supposed to be slightly off the wall, but it borders on cartoonesque. If it not for the occasional swear word or discussion of sex toys, this could be an episode of any Nickelodeon or Disney show.

The characters, writing and story is all paper thin.

I'm really unsure who the audience is for this, it's too adult in content for the tween audience, it's too immature for older young adults, it doesn't have the sarcasm or self-awareness to please an older audience.

I thought this was sweet, easy to get into
tribal_trudy_0422 April 2024
Maybe I was in the mood to watch a film about high school, maybe I'm having an existential crisis being in my thirties, but I really enjoyed this film and it had me tearing up at some of the sweet moments.

I watched 'She's all that' the previous night, clearly I'm in a teenage film type of mood and reminiscing about my teenage years, but that film is a classic. Is 'How to date Billy Walsh as good' as the classic teen films? No. Personally, I think the title is forgettable and we didn't get to know much about him except some obvious emotional moments. He's popular and he knows it, he doesn't shy away from it, but also he's not mean. But he knows people like him. I think there could have been more development of him...he was quite one dimensional.

But, what made me enjoy the film was the relationship between Charitha's Amelia, and Sebastian Croft's Archie. They were the heart of the film. And they're connection and chemistry was believable. It was very Dawson's Creek, but in reverse...instead of Joey being in love and not recognising the boy, it was Amelia who was oblivious.

As a fan of the Big Bang Theory, I loved seeing Kunal Nayyar play Amelia's dad. He gave a haunting performance as a widower who is trying to find love again. Whilst we didn't see much of his new relationship- it was more superficial - I enjoyed every scene that he was in, and his moments as a dad and with his friends. But I think he's a brilliant actor. Looking forward to see him in other stuff post Big Bang Theory.

Archie's parents were also good, if a little caricaturist. I wish I saw more of them and we got a moment where they had a heart to heart with their son. But alas, clearly a lot of moments were either edited away or not considered.

So this film was a solid 7/10. It could have been better with more character development. Perhaps it didn't meet the emotional drama of the Kissing Booth, but it did hit some of the Romantic notes, and I would watch this again on a rainy day.

A fun, but hard to watch movie
kparkerpug21 April 2024
" How to Date Billy Walsh " is a fun movie. It involves witty dialogue, and the classic trope of a love triangle between three teenagers.

However, it was... hard to watch to say the least.

The main character, Archie, is crude and hard to sympathize with. It's hard to believe that he actually cares for Millie with all of the horrible things he does throughout the movie. The only interesting characterization he has is when he speaks to the audience, and that gets old fast.

The titular Billy Walsh is supposed to be an American bad boy that the English girls swoon over. While his accent is lovely, his character is bland and flat. He has no other personality traits, or motives, behind any of his options. His use in the story is just to be a "foil" to Archie, and that is made clear.

Millie, the girl next door, and Archie's best friend, is the worst characterized out of all of them. Her purpose is to just be in love with whoever it calls for in the movie. She's bland, like a manic pixie dream girl but watered down. While she has a motivation, her mother, it fails to bring any substance to her character.

The movie's plot was boring and overdone, but no idea is original. I could excuse the overdone plot for interesting characters, motives, or really anything of interest. However, we're only met with the same predictable plot twists and endings.

This is a fun movie if you put the cringey moments and poor characterization aside. While I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, it's a nice movie if you've already watched all of Netflix's catalogue.

Not a bad film with a familiar plot
lisafordeay17 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
How To Date Billy Walsh is a 2024 romantic teen comedy starring Sebastian Croft(Heartstoppers),Charithra Chandran(Eternals),Tanner Buchanan(He's All That), Lucy Punch(Ella Enchanted),and Tim Downie(Paddington).

The story follows two best friends named Archibald "Archie" Arnold(Croft) and Ameila Brown(Chandran) who have known each other since birth. However Archie isn't too honest with Ameila,as he never told her that his in love with her. Things change when a transfer student from America named Billy Walsh(Buchanan) arrives and Ameila falls in love with him. So her friend Archie sets her up with a love doctor(Archie in disguise as an old man)and he tells her how to be more approachable. But will he ever tell Ameila how he really feels before it's too late?.

Overall this film reminds me of Can't Buy Me Love with Patrick Dempsey meets Win A Date With Tad Hamilton. If you like any of these film with a hint of John Hughes then this is for you.

Predictable from start to finish but I enjoyed it.

Stop trying so hard to be American
moritzike17 April 2024
I would have stopped with the topic. But because it's required that over 600 words has to be said, here we go First Brit high school comedies should explore out of the horizon of trying to be like that show" Sex Education" I mean its getting old. All about a boy was a great high school movie..I could see Britain and the uniqueness that the Brits were trying to bring to bare.

Two stop trying to be American. It sucks. There's a difference between American and British schools. It's clear..the terms for being funny in America is quite different in the UK.

I couldn't relate with this movie even when its clear about the story line. It just isn't funny. It was boring and all over the place. The actors weren't even helping matters .. They clearly needed a better cast than this out of place mediocre and annoying to watch casts.

It fulfilled my expectations
sarayankee7 April 2024
Before criticizing the movie too much as i have seen from some journals rewiew one should keep in mind who the target of these movies is and what they are trying to accomplish.

I find it is a really good teen romantic comedy, it is cute and funny.

The actors were great, I love the choice of narrative style. Archie was a bit annoying at times, but that is more of a plus as it made the character more real.

Is it Oscar worth it? No, but really enjoyable on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

Good watch for fans of to all the boys I loved before, the kissing boot and the perfect date, just to say a few.

How did we come together?????
Prime Video's How to Date Billy Walsh is a rom-com film that relies on the comfort of seeing two people fall in love. The film assumes that its leads have the chemistry to go the distance, but the scripting becomes increasingly empty as the story unfolds. The main selling point is Sebastian Croft's portrayal of Archie, the lovesick best friend, who narrates. The movie does not evolve beyond deeply-rooted cliches, and the film starts with a disheveled Archie lamenting that "all is fair in love and war." As time freezes, Archie addresses the audience, breaking the fourth wall and taking us back to the first day of the last year of school. Archie has been in love with his bestie Amelia since they were young, but fate has other plans. Billy Walsh, an uber hottie, arrives on a motorcycle and immediately catches Millie's eye. If executed better, the meta-leaning feature of Archie's speeches to the audience would make for an easy recommend. However, the film feels like an easy method to toss out unnecessary exposition to tell and not show the storied past between Archie and Amelia. How to Date Billy Walsh is a film that explores the relationship between Millie, Archie, and Amelia, a young woman who is grieving her mother's death. Millie's social status is significantly impacted by Amber, a bully who mocks her every gesture. Millie's grief makes her relatable on a surface level, but the film struggles to understand why Archie cares so deeply about her. The couple's interactions are minimal, and the audience cannot root for their romance. The film's best part is Grouplove's "Tongue Tied" playing over the end credits. If the film were more focused on romance elements and fleshing out the central relationships, it could be a better film. The best part of How to Date Billy Walsh is Grouplove's "Tongue Tied," which adds a touch of complexity to the film. The movie, a mix of Harry Potter and a Nickelodeon movie, suffers from unflattering sex jokes and constant fourth wall breakage. The script is disorderly and the film's overall viewing experience is ruined by characters stuck in their fairy tale universes. Charithra Chandran's performance is enjoyable, but the film's "influencer" angle is not salvaged. The ending is mildly cute, but it's too late to save the movie. The film's overall viewing experience is subpar.

How to Date Billy Walsh
Prismark1015 April 2024
How to Date Billy Walsh is a charmless and irritating movie. It is derivative of similar Young Adult rom coms but is a total misfire.

Amelia (Charithra Chandran) and Archie (Sebastian Croft) are childhood best friends. Now both 17 years old, Amelia has never been kissed. While Archie is hopelessly in love with Amelia but cannot confess his true feelings to her.

When cool American biker dude Billy Walsh turns up as a new transfer student. Amelia tells Archie that she has fallen for Billy Walsh. Much to his consternation.

Amelia has competition for Billy's affections. Like all the the glamorous mean girls at school.

Archie pretends to be an advice app called the Love Doctor, to give Amelia advice. Hoping that would keep them apart. Only his advice ends up bringing Amelia and Billy together.

Inept and confusing writing. No chemistry between the leads. This is another rubbish rom com from streaming sites.

extremely cliche and predictable but enjoyable
tylerhayes-5732421 April 2024
Only watching this cause of sebastian lol not sure who's target audience this is, but it's extremely cliche and predictable. There are a lot of moments that don't make sense or aren't realistic based on the preceding events, but there are some moments that are funny.

If you're drawn to this movie from the advertisements of sebastian cosplaying as a dumpster, you may be disappointed as that's like the most minimal plot point and he's only in it for the smallest fraction of the film.

I think the 1st person talking to the camera style actually fits it quite well, not too cheesy when it happens but yea. Opening sequence was also phenomenal, but the second time we see the ball at the very end was a little weird and the most cliche part.

Soundtrack is also great!! Fits the movie really well and my jaw dropped when i heard stupid and tongue tied.

Would probably watch again, not obsessed with it but not horribly bad.

How to Date Billy Walsh: A Forgettable High School Romance
abphadore14 April 2024
Directed by Alex Pillai, "How to Date Billy Walsh" attempts to bring a fresh twist to the high school romantic drama genre but ultimately falls short of making a lasting impression. The film follows the story of a young nerd who finds himself in a love triangle with his childhood best friend and a charismatic bad boy.

While the inclusion of an interracial love angle adds a unique element to the narrative, the film struggles to offer anything truly original. Instead, it relies on tired clichés and predictable plot twists that fail to engage the audience. Despite a few fleeting moments that may entertain on platforms like Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, the movie as a whole lacks substance.

The cast, including Sebastian Croft, Charithra Chandran, Tanner Buchanan, and Kunal Nayyar, does little to elevate the material. Their performances feel uninspired, with limited opportunity to showcase their talents in a meaningful way.

Overall, "How to Date Billy Walsh" is a forgettable addition to the rom-com genre. Despite its attempts to inject new life into familiar tropes, the film ultimately falls flat, leaving viewers longing for something more substantial and memorable.

This just didn't come together
burgerman9314 April 2024
If the Harry Potter franchise and a Nickelodeon pie-in-the-face bathroom joke-filled movie had a child, this would be it. The movie suffers because of unflattering sex jokes and constant breakage of the fourth wall. It may have been a satire, but the script was very disorderly.

I laughed only once, and ironically it was from a character who got seconds worth of screen time (the restaurant waiter). I did enjoy Charithra Chandran's performance, but she couldn't salvage the overall viewing experience.

It felt like every character was stuck in their own fairy tale universe. Plus the film tried the "influencer" type angle, complete with slow motion scenes and text message bubbles. The ending was mildly cute, but it was too little too late.

Toxic male manipulates female
sharnelperera9 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
What a disappointment. A very typical disappointment. In a nutshell, this movie is about a boy who gaslights, manipulates and lies to his so-called love interest to get her to date him. He doesn't deserve her but ofcourse in true movie fashion, all he has to do is some half baked apology and she's all his. What a horrible message to send to young women! I was appalled that this misogynistic garbage is still being pedalled as entertainment. And a love story no less. The lead actress, Amelia, deserved a better ending. The two leads had no chemistry and Billy was a wasted talent. Overall very disappointing. The only saving grace in this entire film is the half decent soundtrack.

Really really good and very funny
sniperboss-153666 April 2024
First off i didn't know if this movie was gonna be good or not but it actually was and you usually don't get movies like this anymore and yeah i know the story is very very generic and overused but thats not the point this film is so funny and really well made and i don't what it is also whether the girl who plays Amber is stupidly sexy probably another reason why i enjoyed the movie but honestly it really is worth the watch and i can see how it may not be to everyones taste and i can imagine the bad reviews will come flooding after a couple of days seeing this only came out yesterday and yeah honestly i genuinely think its a really good movie regardless of what anyone else thinks tanner buchanan is great as always Sebastian croft is just amazing everyone is amazing in this movie terrific job the behind scenes stuff is also pretty funny too from the things I've seen tanner buchanan post of them doing a recreation of the love actually dance scene that Hugh grant does but yeah i cannot stress it enough its a brilliant movie i definitely recommend it.

I HATE JETT DYASON!!!
ruairipib29 April 2024
As above so below it would seem, I mean that in the sense I hate Jett Dyason, he has a complete lack of presence on screen. Hopefully he learns but knowing how completely self orientated he his - he won't. If it wasn't for his absolute disaster of a performance, I would've given this film 10 stars easily.

Honestly I feel for these young actors, how would you feel if you were in the same profession as Dyason and his incompetence. This film is a disgrace to all films and the director has to live with the fact he cast this buffoon. He should stick to something productive like thinking about another man's piece - as that is what he loves to do.

Poor film, might be better if you're not British
nathanwake-4859328 April 2024
Look the plot is entirely predictable , there are a million films like this already and plenty do this concept better. The cast does land the occasional genuine comedic moments but completely wasted the comedy talents of Guz Khan and Nick Frost. Leads showed flashes of good chemistry but not enough chances to show it together, made it difficult to particularly care or root for them and that pretty much defeats the whole point of a rom com.

The way they represent an English school is utterly ridiculous though. Clearly written by someone who's only idea of England comes from the notion that it's just like America but with school uniform and posh accents, and that they've watched sex education and think that also represents a realistic English school. Either nobody senior enough had a clue about this or didn't have the stones to challenge the people in charge. It takes you out of the movie far too often.

In the end it reduces every character to stereotypical American high school tropes and fails to capture enough elements of comedy or romance to be anything but below average.

Not worth wasting time.
ruizbio4 May 2024
I wander how can someone write such a terrible script, how can someone produce it, how can someone put money in it, and how can actors accept such stupid characters. There is little that can be highlighted in this movie, and all come from the expertise of some supporting actors like Tim Downie. Since the script came first, it is the major one to blame, but the direction is not far behind, with its weak hands, both in its choices, but mainly in conducting actors. Of the main actors, Sebastian Croft is the only one that achieves some character building, the others just deliver lines, and the end result is a complete mess. Not worth wasting your time.

Lighthearted romcom
livingareverie1237 April 2024
Cheesy but good fun. I loved it. The storyline feels predictable - but I mean that's an element of romcoms that we come to enjoy. There's a familiar pattern to the storyline but this movie's unique twists were entertaining and vibrant. The visuals were gorgeous and there's a whimsical and colorful aspect of the setting that is refreshing to see these days. There were some cliches but it was once again all in good fun. The length of the movie might have hurt the pacing a little as things continued to happen very fast and I would have loved to see more interactions and growth in some characters/relationships but i am reminded that it is simply a lighthearted piece in a specific category of this genre that does not require a depth of that extent. I hope to see more works like this in the future. Finally, I really enjoyed the acting and I felt as if they chose the perfect actors for each role.

Classic teen romance cringe cute vibes
lotusmjones15 April 2024
Honestly I love these type of movies; easy to watch, cute and cringe, romantic, teen vibes and very sweet. I loved the overall plot. Of course there were some very cringe and questionable moments and Archie's character definitely annoyed me at points as he gave "nice guy" in the wrong way at times. However it was still funny, had a few amazing declaration of love scenes, more than I've probably seen in one movie. I also loved Amelia's fashion and her character and how relatable she is for many teen girls (including myself as a 24yo teen girl). I will say I didn't like the bullies in the show, especially the girl against girl vibe, although in the end there was a tiny redemption moment between the main bully girl and Amelia, it wasn't enough IMO. However, I guess this just adds to the classic vibe and I still enjoyed the movie. Overall, I recommend this one to anyone who loves a classic teen romance movie with some cuteness, feels, cringeness, stereotypical teen bullies and good vibes.
