Mediocre and cliche nothing amazing but not horrible.
PakistanFilmUpdates17 June 2024
It's the story that has been done again and again although felt abit of Dr strange vibes with a mix of Harry Potter something like that but it's a soild film anyone looking for amazing story telling don't expect it here however if your the type that loves super hero origin movies give a shot although Umro Ayyar is based on a hundred year old novel but the name is only taken from the book and the rest is bran new story set in mondren times. I liked it but it felt like I had something like this before so I hope this sells well but it's up to the consumers. P.s best performance in the film are Faran Tahir, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Manzar Sehbai.

Pakistan's first super hero movie.
RougeTerminator18 June 2024
A must watch.

Pakistan's first attempt at making a superhero movie based on Tilism-e-Hoshruba an Urdu recension of a persian classic the Hamzanama.

In comparison to the best of Marvel or DC I would have rated the movie 5 which is pretty good for a first try. I went for a 7 because of the same reason and the fact that great effort has been observed from the part of the producers and all other people involved in the film and not to even mention the beautiful CGIs. Never thought we would get to see something of this quality in Pakistani cinema but here we are. One step at a time.

It should be emphasised that much more could have been done to make the movie better. Especially in the story writing, story telling and direction department. Characters were unnecessarily expressive at times especially when it came to being angry. Too many borrowed Clichy's, we need more novel ideas than were in this film. Also there was too much English being spoken, should definitely minus that part in the sequel, It is embarrassing how instead of keeping things traditional and culturally relevant there were unnecessary and cringy attempts to westernize things. Aim your things at the regular people and they will come. Instead of bikes could have used a flying carpet. Instead of English could have used Persian, it would have made more sense. Costume design seemed too middle eastern and Mediterranean at times with little basis in south Asian culture and tradition. Usman Mukhtar's character in his fathers suit looked like some ancient roman warrior without the helmets.

Acting by Usman Mukhtar, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Farhan Tahir was the best from the lot but still requires more attention. It was over done at times and underwhelming in places. Also I think, Hamza Ali Abassi's character should be more involved in the sequel if any. He did well. His character seemed much more interesting than Usman Mukhtars.

Nevertheless I would recommend everyone to go and watch this movie, its quite entertaining and unique in the sense that you will never see a movie that is about a superhero but also contains jinns, Ifrits and demons and is rooted in cultural traditional beliefs of the people of that land. Its our duty to help the producers recover the amount put into making this film with aesthetically pleasing visual and CGI also to ensure that they can come back stronger the next time with a larger budget and significant improvements hopefully.

Amazing work and fun to watch
naseer13218 June 2024
After watching film i feel Edit require shorter few clips, SFX are fine but VO is not strong, few scene require film style dialogs but i feel it's been treated as tv drama, VFX are good, duration of the film can be cut over all 30% easy as few scenes are too long make it boring.

Film is a mesmerizing fantasy adventure directed, showcasing a stellar cast that brings this visually stunning tale to life. The film blends breathtaking animation and state-of-the-art visual effects with a captivating action story that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish.

The film explores themes of courage, loyalty, and the timeless battle between good and evil. It also delves into the importance of unity and the strength found in diverse alliances. The story underscores that true heroism lies in selflessness and the unwavering pursuit of justice.

Film is a visual and emotional triumph. The animation and visual effects are nothing short of spectacular, making every scene a feast for the eyes. The well-choreographed action sequences and strong character development add depth to the narrative, ensuring the film is more than just a visual spectacle. CGI team has done beautiful work, Loved it!.

Excels in its visual presentation. The animation is top-notch, creating a vibrant and immersive world. The visual effects seamlessly integrate with the live-action elements, making the fantastical settings and creatures believable and awe-inspiring.

The soundtrack complements the movie's epic scope, with a score that elevates the tension and emotional beats. The sound design is meticulous, enhancing the immersive experience, especially during the action scenes and magical sequences.

Amazing Work Team, Well Done.

Disappointed
samikamboh19 June 2024
I went to watch this movie on the first of Eid which gets quite busy. Also convinced my friends to go along with me hoping that the movie would be good enough.

I won't say I had hopes of watching something of "maula jatt" level as I had already noticed some shortcomings in the trailer but the movie was a complete flop. There was no proper character development, the acting was so bad by most of the cast ( had some exceptions like GURU, LAQQA and hamza ali abbasi) and there was no point to it.

The fight sequences ughhh... the first fight scene in the park was so badly choreographed that even small youtubers make better sequences than that.

I am student at NUST university where some of the scenes were shot and that added to my excitement but very disappointed and sadly.

I am giving it a 4 because of the vfx effects and the effort they put on for visuals, but i hope they focus more on the story if there are any plans of a sequel.

Brilliant movie. A great movie to watch with family
wardahrizwan18 June 2024
Excellent movie. Pleasantly surprised. It is a great package of acting, story, action, humor, engagement and VFX. It's a family movie, you can watch with kids without any concern of language or other elements you want to avoid showing your kid as a parent. It has mild violence but not over done. Loved it totally. Usman Mukhtar was a treat to watch. Well done team UmroAyyar.

Dialogues are powerful. Whole world they have created in this movie is fascinating yet believable. The cameo by Hamza Ali abbas was quite entertaining. Whole cast has performed really well. Kudos to Manzer Sahbai, Ali Kazmi and Sanam Saeed they nailed their characters. My children thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Hoping to see the sequel soon in Koh Kaaf world. Good luck to team Umro Ayyar.

Ummro Ayyar: a mythic adventure with flashes of brilliance
sulemanashiq218 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
In my childhood, I used to buy 2 & 5 rupee stories based on the character of Umro Ayyar from the bookshops of Channan & Dinga. He was my Harry Potter, Captain America, Batman - or any other character that these rich kids enact in their early childhood. So, when the film was announced, I got hyper-excited that the legend of Umro Ayyar would be resurrected on the bigger screen. And with the same kiddy excitement, I decided to watch this film in the cinema near us. We flocked to Cue Cinema, but the show was already housefull; then we hit Emporium and found out about the Family Day fiasco - we had to buy tickets to get in. We got the tickets, and then, after parking the car, we somehow got in, and the film started.

I was in high spirits; I knew from the starting sequence that I was in for a ride of myth, magic, fantasy, sci-fi, and spiritualism. But my expectations began to falter just before the intermission. I was fully absorbed in the world of Umro Ayyar - maybe that's the reason I can pinpoint the sequences where the film lost the captivation of storytelling. It's a kind of story that could have dealt with a tighter script to build the arc of Amar's; the film lost its charm.

VFX was fabulous yet incoherent in certain sequences; the training scenes were below par - they could have been better filmed. I mean, it was Amar who was getting trained, not Sultan or Rocky Balboa!

Action sequences were a blend - spectacular in certain sequences and poorly orchestrated in several parts. I would highly admire the sequences featuring Laqa and the final epic battle between good and evil.

I am not impressed with Usman Mukhtar as Amar; he poised with emotional sequences featuring dialogues, but his overweight physique let him down in action sequences - he was looking chubby and misfit when walking or performing action. In my imagination, Umro Ayyar was always a fit guy with lightning-bolt energy and intellectually witty - I mean, these traits made him Umro Ayyar; Usman's character offered a completely different platter.

Faran Tahir as Laqqa is the real deal; he delivered a stupendous performance. It was my first time watching him play a character who fully conversed in Urdu; he was looking like Fareet - the creature mentioned in the film. I am bamboozled by his acting in a scene where he confronted Amar and his aunt; all three actors - Usman, Faran, and Simi - beautifully acted in that particular scene.

Sanam Saeed reminded me of Hermione Granger - the way she showed warmth for Harry; Saeed's character's Meena showed the same warmth for Amar - a striking resemblance.

Manzar Sehbai was traditionally good as Guru, and Ali Kazmi and the rest of the cast justified their characters.

Hamza Ali Abbasi is the real showstopper; his embodiment of Umro Ayyar traits was a treat to watch - I thoroughly enjoyed his cameo. He stole the show and was one of the plus points of the film. He outclassed Usman and showed that he was the right candidate to play this character. I am excited to watching his cinematic journey as Umro Ayyar; he deserves a standalone film solely telling his journeys with Ameer Hamza. I am looking forward to fascinating times ahead with Hamza as Umro Ayyar.

In a nutshell, Umro Ayyar is an average film with bits of greatness and fascination. It could have been better with a tighter script and a more interesting plot of mythism and magic, which was totally lacking in the origin story. They hinted at a second part, and I think if they're making it, then Usman Mukhtar needs to transform himself to fit the character bill; otherwise, Abbasi needs to be the main lead.

6.5/10 - and Aamir and Aaqib didn't like it; for them, it was a boring and waste-of-money flick. If you're interested in mythism, then I would like to recommend you to watch it, but if you're looking for Parastan, Koh e Kaaf, and traditional Umro Ayyar adventures, then stay away - this film will disappoint you.

"Umro Ayyar: A Flawed Attempt at Reviving a Legendary Hero"
Hammad-Hassan18 June 2024
"Umro Ayyar," directed by Azfar Jafri, attempts to bring a beloved historical character from Urdu literature to the big screen. Featuring an ensemble cast including Usman Mukhtar, Faran Tahir, Ali Kazmi, Adnan Siddiqui, and Simi Raheal, the film aspires to introduce Pakistan's first superhero franchise. However, despite its ambitious goals and notable efforts in visual effects and action sequences, the film falls short in several critical areas, making it an uneven and ultimately disappointing experience.

Story and Plot The narrative begins with a promising premise: in every era, 'ayyars' battle against evils. Amar, our hero, portrayed as a physics teacher, discovers a frequency that can repel jins. After an attack from dark forces, Amar is taken to a distant land by a guru, where he learns to harness his inner strength to confront Laka, the ultimate evil of the present age. The story hints at Amar's lineage, revealing his father as a savior of the ayyars who united them against malevolence.

However, the plot suffers from a lack of coherence and direction. Characters seem to lack clear motives, and the narrative often meanders without purpose. Key plot elements, such as the motif (an ancient locket given to Amar by his father), are introduced but never fully explained or integrated into the story. The film tries to pack in too many elements from Hollywood without developing a strong, original narrative of its own.

Characters and Execution The characters in "Umro Ayyar" are underdeveloped and inconsistent. Amar's transformation from a teacher to a superhero is unconvincing, and his powers and abilities are never clearly defined. The evil character, played by Sana, has the ability to turn friends into foes with a simple blow, yet this power's application is erratic and unexplained, For instance, during a fight, her magic affects only one person, while others remain inexplicably unaffected. In the climactic last scene, just as the momentum builds towards the final showdown, it is abruptly broken. Amar suddenly finds himself in a surreal location, seemingly between heaven and earth, where he meets the real Umro Ayyar who supposedly died centuries ago as depicted in folklore. This ancient hero tells Amar to prepare for his next battle against the irresistible magicians of Kohi Kaaf, further disrupting the narrative flow and leaving the audience puzzled.

Supporting characters often show more energy and decision-making ability than the hero himself, undermining Amar's role as the central figure.

The film's humor attempts fall flat, and there is a noticeable lack of emotional depth and character development. This absence of an emotional journey for the characters prevents the audience from engaging with their struggles and triumphs. One moment, a character behaves one way, and the next, they act in a completely contradictory manner, making it difficult to connect with or understand their motivations.

Visual Effects and Action Sequences While the film does make an effort to incorporate high-quality visual effects and action sequences, many of these elements feel derivative and borrowed from popular Hollywood films such as "Harry Potter," "Thor," and "Spiderman." The lack of originality in these sequences detracts from the film's overall impact. Despite some well-executed scenes, the VFX often seem out of place and fail to blend seamlessly with the story.

Dialogue and Conceptualization The dialogue, particularly the guru's explanations in scientific terms and philosophical dilemmas, is overly complex and difficult to follow. This creates a barrier for the average Pakistani cinema-goer, who may find it challenging to grasp the concepts being discussed. The film's attempt to blend science and mysticism often results in confusion rather than clarity.

Conclusion In conclusion, "Umro Ayyar" is a commendable effort to bring a classic hero to the silver screen, but it struggles with an ordinary plot, inconsistent characters, and a lack of emotional engagement. The film's attempt to lay the groundwork for a sequel is unconvincing and feels forced. Despite its high aspirations and some notable visual effects, "Umro Ayyar" ultimately fails to deliver a cohesive and compelling story. The potential for a great Pakistani superhero franchise remains untapped, and future efforts will need to focus on stronger storytelling, character development, and originality to truly captivate audiences.

Just a one time watch
hammadkhan-7199220 June 2024
From the perspective of the Pakistani movie industry, it's a decent effort, but the film suffers from weak story and character development, tedious dialogues, and lackluster acting. The actors fail to do justice to their roles, making it hard to connect with the characters or the plot. It's worth watching once, though I hoped it would compare to Maula Jutt, but it fell short of those expectations. The pacing drags in many parts, with long, boring conversations that do not add much to the narrative.

Despite these flaws, the movie shows potential, and it's clear that the industry is making strides in the right direction. The visual and technical aspects are commendable and hint at what could be achieved with better scripts and performances. On the bright side, I enjoyed the Deadpool trailer and definitely plan to watch that. Hopefully, future projects will learn from these shortcomings and deliver more compelling content. It's a step forward, but there's still a long way to go for the Pakistani film industry to reach its full potential.

don't watch this movie because you think the trailer was good and compared it with Moula Jutt
talhahabib-1316319 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the movie on the third day of release and I had very high expectations so here is my breakdown with SPOILERS.

SPOILER ALERT

The character development and storyline was so bad that I was laughing even at their serious scenes. They have a villain who can control everyone's mind but having difficulty finding the heroes while they know where they are. Hero has zero motivation to fight the villain but the hero suddenly wakes up and decides to fight and gets good. Why? What happened so suddenly? What was supposed to be the plotline his motivation (his aunt's death) is later at the end of the movie. And their GURU is useless. Has no power, says he is helping them hide but the villains still get inside the castle. The VFX was good but the whole movie was tatti. And Umr Ayyar part was just a mix of Jack Sparrow and Monkey King. And the scene was copied from Infinity war after Thanos snaps the finger and goes to the spirit realm.

Ali Kazmi character Maaz had motivation and had a character development but only during the start, when the hero gets good in his fight his character starts hating the hero without any indication that he was gonna do that. If you're gonna show us that he is gonna hate the main character at least give a hint before.

The worst part was the hero is a software engineer and he is working with transistors and accidentally finds out the transistor is the villain's weakness, makes a weapon with it, tries to trap the villain and guess what. Villain destroys those weapons in a second.

The last army fight: villain army has guns and is in formation, Ayyars are without long range weapons, everyone would expect that villain will start shooting and will kill the Ayyars but they start running towards Ayyars while shooting in the air. Last fight was a 100% disappointment, we had no clue that the Ayyars were in thousands because they only mentioned 35, and didn't even show that they were gonna be in huge numbers. Same goes for the villain army.

Here's how the movie should have happened.

Beginning: Introduce us the child version of the hero with his father and aunt. And when his father goes missing, show us how the hero and his aunt were affected. (A few years later) The hero is a professor and the same intro we saw. Then introduce the villains properly with who they are, (Jinns who hate Ayyar because Ayyar are protecting the people of earth and jinns wants to control the whole world but they need a human body and they possessed him because Lagga sold his soul to the demon and he was a warrior too) within his hiding place bringing an Ayyar and sacrificing him to gain more power to Lagga. Then cut to Ayyars as they learn Maaz's brother dies and they are hurt. They go to guru and he says we need Amar now and we have to move quickly. Then cut to the same scene with jinns going for hero and opening his third eye and villain learns about it as he is also connected to the eye so he knows that a new descendant of Umro Ayyar is here so she starts finding him not the Ayyars. Because whoever finds him first could destroy the other party. Ayyar saves him and villains kill him before he gets powerful. First fight goes the same but with good choreography and Ayyars rescue him to a castle not a safe house. That part was useless.

At the castle he learns that he is an Ayyar and needs to learn to save everyone but has trouble in motivation gets beaten up, then his guru tells him about his father and how Lagga killed his father then he gets angry and gets motivation to learn, then have the training montage. After the training they find out Lagga is killing Ayyars trying to find Amar's location. Amar is furious and wants revenge, goes to fight, Lagga gets brutally beaten up, his guru comes and saves him but also gets injured, and brings him back while damaging Lagga too. They both retreat, guru gives up his life to save Amar and he asks Maaz to follow Amar but he refuses as he says he is immature and not ready to be a leader and starts getting hard on Amar. Amar gets healthy and has a fight with Maaz and leaves the castle and goes to his home. Where his aunt who also knows about Ayyars and gives him his father's locket when he wears it he gets more powerful and his aunt tells him about Umro Ayyar that it is just a title for a leader who protects his people and you must act in your father's steps to save everyone because Lagga is growing stronger day by day. He goes back and learns that Ayyars were found out and got attacked by Lagga's people killing 5-10 Ayyars who were close to Maaz and Maaz accused Amar for it because of his immature act going for Lagga led them to the castle. He apologizes and says he is going to fight and he can come too. Maaz sees that he is also hurt and he really wants revenge. He doesn't accept his apology but still goes along with his Ayyars because he wants revenge too. They go to the Lagga's location and fight his people. Amar saves Maaz during the fight which makes him forgive Amar and as they confront Lagga he is getting more powerful by using black magic and getting more jinns in his body. Maaz and Amar attacks him but they both get beaten up Amar gets knocked and Lagga put a knife through Maaz's stomach and he falls down, Amar gets furious and reaches his true potential surpassing Lagga, and easily overpowers him has a big last fight with him and kills him, comes to Maaz as he put his hand on his stomach he learns that he can also heal with his new unlocked powers, Amar heals Maaz as he was still alive, Amar and Maaz with few of their Ayyars remaining comes back to their place as Amar their leader on the throne and Maaz as his advisor.

Last note: the movie could've been still the same stupid movie without meena as she brought nothing to the table.

Eagerly Waiting for this Childhood Story
communiqueaide11 January 2023
As a child, I had a deep affiliation with the character of UmroAyyar, the cunning and mischievous hero of many old novels. I would spend hours lost in the stories of his daring adventures, relishing every twist and turn of his cunning plots. The character of UmroAyyar held a special place in my imagination, and I was always excited to discover new stories featuring him. Even now, as an adult, the thought of a film adaptation of the character fills me with excitement, and I can't wait to see the beloved character come to life on the big screen.

An exiciting movie to watch. Good storyline with engaging twist s. Storyline is not a no brainer rather links up well with world beyond time and space something that is believable to absorb.

Vfx work is superb. Pakistan cinema needs more on this genre to expand the horizons. All actors performed well. Special mention of Versatile Sanam Saeed, Genuis of Manzar Sebai sb and Farhan Tahir's believable performance. Hamza Ali Abbasi was brilliant too and wish we could have seen him more in the movie.

I would really want that this series should expand further as Umro Ayyar has a rich history and he's a super hero who has been untapped on this massive scale. Kudos to the director and producer of this movie.

A solid 8/10.
