I didn't like the ending at all!!
Just-A-Girl-1421 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I think the show is a good show. Interesting storyline and good acting. The pace, which is an important element for me, was also good.

Unfortunately I didn't like the ending at all. I watched all the episodes in order to learn what really happened but by the end of the show the only thing I know for sure is that I learned absolutely nothing. We have no idea what is real and what's not. We can't really trust anything. We assume that she was the one who stole the money because the account was in her name but we only have the husband's story of how it happened which isn't necessarily true since he lied before. If she stole the money we don't know why she did it. She had a plan because she had a bug ready but what was the plan? Why was she going back to a life she clearly left behind? We don't know that either. If the video is real (which we can know for sure) then why did she jump? She says she never meant to kill herself so how is jumping off the boat was part of the plan? No idea. Who really loved her? Was it James or Baden or both? Who did she love back? Assuming she even loved any of them since clearly they weren't part of the original plan. Can we really trust that Baden is dead? We didn't see his body and he did say that his only solution is to disappear. We don't even know what kind of person she is. Since her accident she seems to be more of a good person but is she really? Her memory is gone but are her character and moral values also gone? If your memory is gone does your personality changes too? Who was she before the accident? Who is she now? What is her plan? Why fake her death? Why go back to a potentially dangerous? What's her plan?

The way I see it, we can't really trust anything that isn't coming directly from her memory so if we can't trust anyone and anything then we know practically nothing and that's what I don't like. After watching an entire season we should have had some answers. I don't mind that there's a second story there. The story with the horse and the bleeding woman. She clearly has some traumatic past that she needs to get back to for some reason but the first season should have given us some closure and answer some questions. I got no answers, just more questions and it's a very unsatisfying ending for me. Better ending was her recovering her memories and realizing she needs to go back to her original plan for such and such reasons. We could have had the answers we were looking for the entire season and a second storyline development for us to be curious about for the second season. The way it was done is disappointing. No answers makes me feel like I wasted my time.

Hard to watch, and heartstrings are pulling

Episode 8 of Surface starts with Sophie running. It's been several weeks since Baden's murder, and she makes her way to Baden's empty apartment, struggling to hold back tears as the memories of the past taunt her mind. She continues running, making it back home where James is chatting to Inspector Seager from SFPD. He's there about Baden, and specifically the fight that happened earlier in the night. Sophie brings up the affair, but the officer is already aware of this. In fact, he decides to question Sophie alone at the dining table. So after meandering our way through 8 episodes of a mystery-but-not-really-a-mystery, we're baited the prospect of a second season where we explore more of Sophie/Tess' past. My question is, why would we want to? Sophie has proven herself to be a pretty horrible protagonist. Now, don't get me wrong James, Caroline and Harrison aren't exactly squeaky clean either but this is our protagonist we're talking about, the person we're supposed to rally behind. Episode 6 went some way to try and lift any ill will against Sophie, showing her confronting the past and her manipulative ways, including her affair and constant lies to try and push James' career forward, even though he wasn't exactly onboard with this to begin with. Then we end with Sophie deciding James deserves everything he has coming for him, punishing the guy over her mistakes regarding work and, more importantly, the fact he had nothing to do with her jumping. This whole hook ended up being a switch and bait as in the end, it turns into more of a whydunit rather than a whodunit.

Whether Apple will actually greenlight a sequel to this one or not remains to be seen but given the tepid reaction from both critics and audiences to this, I'm failing to see the need for it to be honest. Either way, we wrap up most of the big plot points but also leave a lot of unanswered questions too. As far as finales go, this one was average at best. Flashbacks reveal more of Sophie's behaviour. It turns out she found a blue key with the word "terminus" on. This belonged to a storage warehouse just across the street. Heading there, she finds a single bag is on the floor. And that bag holds a phone, cash and one contact - Eliza Huntley. There's also Tess' passport too. It's everything she needs to get away.
