Just Ok with a few yawns
destiny_west7 October 2023
I knew that Slotherhouse was going to be train-wreck of a film, hopefully in a good way. The trailer looked funny, and who doesn't love sloths?

This film definitely had its moments, the best part being Alpha the sloth, who steals the show and in my case I was definitely team Alpha.

However, the film started to drag on way too long and I started to yawn and it was losing my attention rather quickly. I had to stop the impulse to skim through the rest of the film. I managed to hang in there, but just.

I think they just dragged it on way too long and they should have made the kills gorier for entertainment purposes. If you like spoof films, then you should enjoy it.

Needed more gore, but very fun!
SlashedProductions1 September 2023
If a movie called Slotherhouse sounds good to you, you should check it out. The jokes may not land all the time, and it being PG-13 was very frustrating due to there being hardly any blood/gore.

Yet, at the end of the movie I was smiling and rooting for our leads. There is some very acceptable character work here that is done in a way that seems cheesy and odd, but on brand to the style of the movie.

Not perfect, but definitely a memorable flick that delivers funny sloth antics. Just wish there was more to the kills. The movie seems to really shove the kills to the side in a few scenes. Not sure if this is due to budget or trying to acquire a PG-13 rating- or both.

Is it..a real movie?
Patient4449 October 2023
Slotherhouse is quite an ok experience, with funny dialogue, nicely written characters and a length of 1 hour and 33 minutes for a movie that overall, doesn't feel too much like..a movie.

The problem for me, was the sloth itself. You see, they gave him complete freedom as a killer, being able to do anything that a human does, so because of this I never got the purpose of the animal pick. Yes, they do mention that it is a lesson to leave wild animals in the wild, but I swear, if the killer here was human, this would have been a cute little slasher that worked.

I genuinely believe that if you are high, you can appreciate it a lot more.

It doesn't fall in the same category as Cocaine Bear, neither with The Gingerdead Man, somewhere in the middle, trying to be its own thing, but only partially succeeding.

All in all, for a one time view, you could do a lot worse.

Slotherhouse is more of an experience, because it feels so different than the regular horror comedy productions, so it takes some getting used to it.

Cheers!

Not a campy horror movie, just a bad movie.
rogersg-664617 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was one of the absolute worst movies I've ever seen. And I don't mean that in the sense "it is so bad it was good" like some campy horror movies may be. Genuinely awful movie. It had potential. Seemed like the movie was going to be self-aware of the premise but it was not. Next to no gore, the sloth is barely shown doing any murdering - anytime something happens the camera cuts to another angle. Some ideas in the movie could have been neat but either failed to be executed or were used ad nauseum. One of the most annoying characters I've ever seen in any movie was Zenny (I believe that was her name). The voice was absolutely terrible - imagine a woman doing a deep exaggerated masculine voice as they imitate a man - and the lack of any meta commentary in the movie regarding the voice just solidified they thought it was okay. The sloth goes on a murder spree after seeing the new owner in a pic with their former, abusive owner, but it doesn't try to kill her the next time it sees her shortly after. I'm okay with the sloth surviving being shot multiple times or moving far quicker than a sloth or taking selfies with victims. But there was no attempt at cleverness in the movie. I feel like this was a rough draft of a movie, but nobody bothered to look it over and patch up certain areas. Truly one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and that is not being used in an endearing way. Cocaine Bear was a million times better than this movie.

Bad and not funny
Smarmelade24 September 2023
Apparently movie's creator wanted to make the dumbest thing he can imagine.

Well, congratulations.

Is it dumb? Yes.

Is it fun? No.

Is it bad-good? No.

It's supposed to be a parody or something but it's just bad. Acting is bad, there wasn't one single funny bit. Maybe it was better on paper but not in reality. Script is also bad and unfunny.

Main problem is lack of imagination, just being random and stupid is not enough.

I seriously have flashbacks to Zombeavers, another not funny just bad movie you shouldn't watch. Just like you shouldn't watch this. It looks like it could be fun but in actuality isn't.

Disappointed
jens-bockelmann17 September 2023
I was sold on the trailer because sloth = cute!

That said..

+ everyone involved seemed to have a good time/tried their best + real puppet/animatronic sloth, no cgi + they know what kind of film this is but it never drifts into "Sharknado"-waters + little details, e.g. The name of the sisterhood spelling SLTH, the names of the former presidents being those of Disney princesses, "Halloween" & "Child's Play" homage

  • way too long and meandering script
  • the PG-13 REALLY hurt this film
  • confusing direction in the montage & action scenes
  • so many missed opportunities: Why not make a Freddy in the bathtub reference (sloths have claws!)? Show the sloth puppet more! We all know it's a puppet and we want to see that! Mire kills! Moore boobs!

If your selling point is a killer sloth then MAKE A BLOODY, NAUGHTY KILLER SLOTH MOVIE, ffs! This wasn't that bad but really unsatisfactory (The audience was hyped and laughed even through the trailers before the actual film. After approx. 30 mins NO ONE was laughing anymore).

I was reminded of how much better "Scream Queens" was the entire time.

Doesn't take itself too seriously, and that's ok
davidolin20 October 2023
This movie feels like it was filmed by a team of YouTubers. The writing, effects, and continuity are all pretty eh. But it's far from the worst film I've seen. Probably the best feature of the movie is the film score, although that also is borderline over done. The movie survives by playing off the dumb backstabbing sorority trope, while also coming off as a slightly better low budget national lampoon film. Not something to go a theatre for though. It comes off as goofy and fun, without falling to the level of Sharknado. I'd say it's a good watch if you don't have anything else on your list. TLDR: Low budget but fun.

It's poached.
nogodnomasters23 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens as we see a baby sloth taking down a gator in Panama. He is tranquilized. Emily (Lisa Ambalavanar) wants to become the president of Sigma Lambda Theta sorority. Current president Brianna (Sydney Craven) in charge of the mean girl clique is in her way. She has a chance meeting with the sloth poacher and obtains the killer sloth who is off his meds. The sloth kills folks who do him wrong.

They did a sloth because the doll thing is overdone. Having a sloth who can read, and operate cell phones, computers, and automobiles is far-fetched even for a doll let alone a sloth raised in Panama. It was very hokey. Girls were stereotyped for humor that fell short.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Here comes ... Slothie!
kosmasp25 September 2023
No pun intended - also this has more shades of Chucky (childs or rather animal play then) ... so not trying to compare it to the classic. There is the scene of course which may remind you of the Here comes Johnnie quote ... other than that, this is just silly fun.

Suspend your disbelief and just go with the flow. Beautiful (mostly) girls being the one dimensional sorority girls (cliches) you imagine. The sloth is the main attraction here (no pun intended either) ... and the way it moves or jumps or even ... well runs! There are many scenes that do not make sense ... but if you are a fan of the animatronic (of the puppet effects), you will like what the movie is doing ... a lot of violence and blood ... and I reckon some social commentary about ... social media and all that stuff ... again, do not overthink it ... the sloth might get you if you do ...

Stay away from this stinker at all cost!
psxexperten25 September 2023
1 star is generous.

WORDS cannot express to you how outrageously terrible this film is. A utter abomination to the film industry.

This movie was a swing and a miss. I got no enjoyment or entertainment out of the storyline, and it was a really difficult movie to sit through. In fact, I managed to endure a staggering, and utterly boring, 50 minutes of the 109 minutes runtime, then I just gave up out of sheer and utter boredom.

Overall the acting contributes to the failure & it makes it difficult to watch past 20 minutes as the acting/performances are utterly embarrassingly terrible. I'm sat here in utter disgust with the entirety of the film.

I think the best part of the movie were the last five minutes and I was so excited when the credits finally scrolled.

Movie knew what it was!
Franks_Rumham21 October 2023
All the hate is definitely coming from your "quality taste" horror fans! This movie knew exactly what it was and it rolled with it and it's killed! Unlike most movies today using copious amounts of cgi it decided to go the practical route. Using a doll or animatronic it went with the Chucky approach and if you love practical affects stupid but not too stupid comedy and a plot that you can watch baker outta your mind then this is your movie. Maybe it's just me but I love comedy horror that doesn't require me to have to think how point A fits to point B! As long as you have comedy that makes me laugh and doesn't feel forced and kills whether it's shown or off camera then you've got me hook line and sinker! I'm sure I'm rating this a bit too high at the moment but I can assure this won't drop below a 7/10 after my second watch. Take the movie for what it is and enjoy it!

Surprisingly good...
paul_haakonsen26 September 2023
I had never heard about this 2023 horror comedy titled "Slotherhouse" prior to sitting down to watch it. But I have to admit that seeing the movie's cover, the movie's title and the synopsis, then I was rather interested in watching the movie.

Turns out that writers Bradley Fowler and Cady Lanigan delivered a really entertaining and enjoyable script and storyline for the movie. And it turned out to be a rather enjoyable and refreshing take on the slasher genre, well, with a ferocious sloth thrown into the mix. And it worked quite well. I was genuinely and wholeheartedly entertained throughout the course of the entire 93 minutes that the movie ran for.

The acting performances in "Slotherhouse" were good. I wasn't familiar with a single performer on the cast list though, neither actress or actor. And that was something I liked about it, because it is always nice to see new talents on the screen. They had a great cast ensemble together for the movie, and the carried the movie quite nicely with their performances.

There is a good amount of comedy mixed in with the slasher horror elements. And that was something that director Matthew Goodhue managed to balance quite nicely. The comedy elements never become too much, so the movie doesn't become a full-blown comedy.

Something that really was great about "Slotherhouse" was the sloth named Alpha. Talk about a fun character. The sloth was very likable, despite its killing demeanor and ferocious nature. It looked good and it was actually bringing a lot of charm to the screen, because the puppeteers managed to give the sloth so much character, personality and traits that Alpha was a character right up alongside all the actresses on the screen. Plus the fact that the sloth ensured a great many laughs as well throughout the course of the 93 minutes runtime also helped to make it a memorable character. I would say that Alpha actually makes the movie watchable by itself.

I was genuinely entertained by "Slotherhouse", and there wasn't a single dull moment throughout the entire movie. If you enjoy horror comedies, then "Slotherhouse" from director Matthew Goodhue is well-worth sitting down and watching. This is certainly a movie that I warmly recommend.

My rating of "Slotherhouse" lands on a seven out of ten stars.

Slotherhouse was a real Disappointment!
jessie-freyne24 September 2023
"Slotherhouse" was an intriguing attempt at blending horror and comedy, but it left much to be desired. The film started with promising potential, setting up a classic horror scenario: a group of friends trapped in a remote, eerie house. However, as the plot unfolded, it became clear that the execution fell short of expectations.

One of the major issues with "Slotherhouse" was its disjointed narrative. The story jumped between various subplots and character arcs, making it difficult to follow and connect with the characters. It felt like the filmmakers were trying to cram too many ideas into one film, resulting in a convoluted mess.

Moreover, the humor in the film often missed the mark. While some moments elicited chuckles, many jokes felt forced and out of place, disrupting the overall tone. The balance between horror and comedy, a delicate tightrope to walk, was not achieved effectively, leaving the audience unsure of whether to laugh or be frightened.

The characters in "Slotherhouse" were another source of disappointment. They lacked depth and development, making it hard to invest emotionally in their fates. It seemed like they were written as caricatures rather than fully realized individuals. As a result, it was challenging to care about what happened to them.

One redeeming aspect of the film was its production design. The setting of the house was suitably eerie, and the practical effects used for some of the horror elements were commendable. However, these positives were not enough to salvage the overall viewing experience.

In the end, "Slotherhouse" felt like a missed opportunity. With a more cohesive plot, better-developed characters, and a more refined approach to humor, it could have been a memorable horror-comedy. Unfortunately, it left viewers wanting more, not in a good way. If you're a die-hard fan of the genre and don't mind a bit of chaos, you might find some enjoyment in "Slotherhouse," but for most, it's a film that can easily be skipped.

Slotherhouse lacks the right blend of comedy and memorable kills that made Cocaine Bear a success
kevin_robbins16 October 2023
I watched Slotherhouse (2023) on Hulu today. The film's plot revolves around a senior sorority member vying for the role of president who adopts a sloth as their macabre mascot. As sorority members begin turning up dead, the question arises: is there a serial killer on the loose, or could it be the sloth?

Directed by Matthew Goodhue, known for Woe, and featuring Lisa Ambalavanar (Titans), Sydney Craven (Jeepers Creepers: Reborn), Andrew Horton (Jupiter's Legacy), Bianca Beckles-Rose (Watch What I Do) and Annamaria Serda (Crawl).

Despite what the title might suggest, the setup and premise of the storyline aren't as bad as you'd think. In fact, there was potential here. I found the initial kills and the early storyline engaging, and I had mixed feelings about the characters, wanting them all to meet their demise. The first few kills were decent. However, the film takes an unusual turn with the sloth googling, dancing, and even doing martial arts, which felt like a bit too much. If the kills had been taken further and the dancing sloth toned down, this movie might have fared better. Unfortunately, it falls short of its potential.

In conclusion, Slotherhouse lacks the right blend of comedy and memorable kills that made Cocaine Bear a success. I would rate this a 3.5-4/10 and recommend skipping it.

Infuriating.
m-dimitroulakos6 November 2023
I absolutely love goofy, ridiculous B-movies and this film is without question, that. But it completely fails its own premise. The antagonist being a sloth is purely for the title. It could've been any thing. A doll. A meerkat. A lamp. Nothing about the film would have to change. I'm afraid the creators simply aren't creative enough to have fully realized a murderous sloth movie, considering the sloth runs, jumps, moves extremely fast etc when it needs to.

I can forgive the bad acting, writing, plot, pacing if the jokes were good. But again, the movie fails because the sloth doesn't act like a sloth. While watching I saw MULTIPLE opportunities where a joke/gag could have been done regarding how slow sloths are. What a wasted opportunity.

Sluterhouse
phildeesnow24 September 2023
Imagine one of the worst puppeteered Muppets ever, surrounded by female influencers ever, in a movie that, like this generation just try way too hard to achieve praise and nothing else, and you have this crap.

I know it's supposed to be a comedy, but in my book comedies are supposed to be funny and this is not.

To me, it was irritating like those unfunny TikTokers who add the same recorded laugh over and over trying for something stupid to work.

It's like an extremely long sketch from Saturday Night Live that doesn't work.

If you want to laugh, tickle your pickle with something else, this movie won't do it, unless you have the I. Q of a sloth.

I actually enjoyed this
kadealexander31 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie exceeded my expectations. Its a horror comedy with a very silly plot, but it is very self aware. Its obvious the director didn't take it seriously and was just trying to have fun with it.

The Sloth is insanely smart. It makes its own instagram page and posts pics. It roofies a girl and then brutally murders her. It smothers a girl with a pillow. Also, the Sloth gets shot with a pistol multiple times and is unaffected. Is there anything this Sloth can't do?

For an idea this outrageous, i think the director actually did a pretty good job. I mean, if you watch a movie about a killer Sloth, you should know what you're getting yourself into.

A fun surprise.
jurasikpaul7 October 2023
A pretty fun surprise to be honest, an original gore slasher with a furry killer, though it could have used a bit more gore and blood I think, but still a nice light horror movie with good quality and good acting.

You could be annoyed by the little bit of PETA moral lesson, but it's fairly light and only gently shoved down your throat from time to time, fairly dosed between a few furry murders. And honestly, with the dose of social justice crammed now a days in every movie, it's really fairly light, this movie is really made to entertain first and foremost.

A good time with friends, junk food and beers! ^^

I wish it leaned into the B-movie it's meant to be
FeastMode14 December 2023
During the first five minutes of Slotherhouse, I was laughing repeatedly. Characters were reacting in the oddest ways. Like a random person at the mall laughing when a dog urinates on him. It seemed intentional and the perfect B-movie tone.

But as the movie went on, it felt less like a B-movie and more like they were actually trying. And that magnifies the terrible quality acting, writing and all-around filmmaking. It becomes a glaring flaw as opposed to an intentional quirk.

I had basically given up hope until the last 30 minutes when stuff finally starts happening. Everything involving the sloth had me laughing hard. I wish they just focused on that because the non-sloth parts make the movie difficult to get through.

If they made a 15 minute short with only the sloth parts, I would watch it repeatedly and probably rate it 7 or 8 stars. (1 viewing, 12/13/2023)

From the beginning, SO BAD... IT'S GOOD.
wingthwong26 October 2023
From the beginning, you know it's going to be bad. The sloth clearly looks like an animatronic Jim Henson reject. Once you get past that, let the silliness commence. I am absolutely tired of rated R comedy horrors that are neither comedy or horror. They are just filled with foul language and soft porn, and offer little else. It's nice to see a PG-13 movie of this genre come out swinging with a fresh and absurd perspective. You will find yourself wondering what this little sloth will be capable of next. You will wonder what way this little sloth will murder its next victim. Just remember that you have to take off your serious hat and enjoy a silly horror movie.

A Slothtastic Horror Comedy
MrAwesome102228 October 2023
If you go into Slotherhouse expecting a serious horror film, you may have missed the title of the film. Slotherhouse is an exceptionally silly horror film; that has goofy fight scenes, off-the-wall kill scenes, and all the camp you could ever expect from a single film.

There will be times to laugh while watching Slotherhouse, especially from Zenny (Bianca Beckles-Rose) and Ms. Mayflower (Tiff Stevenson). Bianca Beckles-Rose is the stand-out actor in the film, and scenes with her make the movie that much more enjoyable.

Suspend your disbelief and expect to see some rather off-the-wall moments with a Sloth and Slotherhouse will hit like it was intended.

Real Score: 5.9.

Bad (not in the way we thought) and not funny
skylermoore2 November 2023
Slotherhouse had 20 million dollars of budget. Did that go to a good writing crew? No. Good actors? No. A good director? No. Good graphics? No. Good cgi? There is almost none. A good Sloth puppet at least? Nope. Where did it go then?? I will give this movie as one positive, the cameras feel studio quality... That is something you only hear if your movie has NOTHING good about. There is one sequence I found genuinely funny and maybe because I was an hour in and I was delusional. I could not believe this film was only an hour and 33 minutes long. I felt like I had watched a 3 hour movie. Between the poor overall acting, over acting, dreadfully boring moments between the humans to try and character develop this is a snoozefest. Of course I wasn't expecting anything amazing, this is a movie about a sloth killing people but you expect dumb fun and good comedy. This has neither. It is boring and unfunny. It's a waste of time and likely only released for tax purposes.

How
hddakin-180083 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
How did someone green light this movie, I mean they lost 19 million on this 😂. And how did the girl who was hot by a car, who's life support got shut off, and was suffocated, somehow get in a car with an IV and shoot the sloth. And how did the sloth not die after being shot, thrown, out a window, and stabbed with a tiara. And drive a car. But this movie was great when the sloth was in it other than that it sucked. It was pretty much a combination of Chucky, Halloween, and Mean Girls. This was was only good to make fun of but I don't regret watching it, just for the fact that I got to see a sloth kill people.

A comedic slasher/horror that isn't funny, gory, or scary.
philiphunt-2138824 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Someone must have made a joke about what would happen if a sloth was a blood thirsty murderer and unfortunately had the money to turn it into a movie. Bad movies are usually so bad that they're funny or they are self aware and they make a bad movie well. This movie does neither. This movie genuinely comes off as something that was written for a junior high creative writing contest. It has no redeemable qualities. It isn't funny, it isn't scary, the story delivers no satisfying resolution, and there are no likable characters. At least ten people die and no one notices throughout the entire move. The one character that should have been killed by the sloth survived, and continually screws over the main characters while getting no redemption or turn around. I will never watch it again and I will tell everyone I know to save themselves a long and excruciating 90 minutes. I love when movies are silly, goofy, or just plain dumb, but they still need to be enjoyable, and this was not.
