The 2012 Formula 1 season begins in Australia, with a wet Practice 1 and 2 session, where mostly the Mclarens are dominating. For the qualifying hour, the big surprise is Kimi Raikkonen who only qualifies 18th for Lotus. The other drivers were the two Caterhams, the two Marussias and two HRT's who will not be able to start the race, because their lap time didn't reach the 107% rule. In Q2, Massa qualified only in 16th and Alonso spun off and was classified in 12th place. For the Pole position shoot-out Hamilton did a quick lap earlier on and he remained on Pole Position, Button finished in 2nd, which meant the first McLaren front row since the European Grand Prix in 2009. Grosjean had a really good qualifying session as he went on to qualify 3rd fastest. Schumacher finished 4th, but last year's winner Sebastian Vettel only qualified in 6th place, behind his Australian team-mate Mark Weber. Webber will be trying to finish higher than his personal best at his home grand prix in the race.
