A young bright student, Luke Cronin, is the star of his debating team. Although he comes from a poor background, a recruiting scout for the prestigious school watches him in action; Luke is offered a full scholarship to an expensive prep school, where he is sure to succeed. Luke's best friend, Ronnie Jacks, a black young man, doesn't stand a chance to accompany Luke to the more exclusive institution.
Not everything is rosy for Luke. He finds out in the worst way that life at the new place comes at a cost. In fact, Luke is not up to the pressure that his mentor, who was instrumental in bringing him to Maynard expects of him. Luke had also a strained relationship with his own father, a man with basic education. Luke turns out dead.
A young man from Maynard is the one responsible for bringing new evidence in Luke's death. In reconstructing the investigation the Cold Case team discovers a hidden past, a rival that didn't want Luke to succeed, his friend Alyssia Lane, and the real killer, someone no one suspected.
Another good chapter of this series. Directed by Holly Dale, a frequent contributor to the program and written by Jerome Schwartz. Highlighted in the program is Detective Nick Vera, whose overweight is questioned by a young physician who wants him to stop killing himself, but it's overturned by an older doctor who couldn't care less what happened to Nick.
