Spring Stampede 1999 Thoughts
Spring Stampede 1999 was a PPV event produced by WCW. It took place on April 11, 1999 at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. The event sold out with attendence of 17,690 fans. The event is notable for the world title win of Diamond Dallas Page and is also considered by many fans & critcs to be the last great PPV the WCW ever produced. It was by far WCW's best PPV of 1999.
9 matches took place on the card with the main event being a Four Corners Match featuring Hogan, DDP, Ric Flair, and Sting with Randy Savage as the ref. We also had 2 other Championship matches with one being the conclusion of a tournament to crown the US champion after being vacant for weeks. Another major storyline involved Goldberg battling the man who ended his streak, Kevin Nash.
The Good - Majority of the card turned out to be good and most of the matches of the middle and end of the show were good. DDP winning the main event felt really special and the crowd was on fire for it. The main event at the end was a great closure. Goldberg despite the terrible ending to the Streak months prior to this show actually had a good moment of defeating Kevin Nash. Rey Mysterio vs. Kidman and the opening were also a fun and they all really had chemistry. The tag match also made for a great match with the dirty and intense heat going on.
The Meh - The Hardcore match nearly started to get ruined by the repeated blows but it at the end was fun. The U. S title match was also not the good. I feel it would have been more interesting as an opening or a TV match. Scott Steiner honestly wasn't someone I could click with.
The Bad - Mikey Whipwreck vs. Scotty Riggs was an absolute dud. The crowd chanted boring and I agreed. This match wasn't even originally set on the card and it had no reason to be on as it was just a 7 minute squash match. Konnan vs. Disco was also Lackluster. I also might question Hogan being written with a storyline injury to exit hims off the match for storyline plans.
Overrall - It was a good show. I don't think of it as a must-watch or a favorite of 99 but definitely an enjoyable show none the less. Thumbs Up
