A new neighbor named Paul Morton (Larry Storch) has moved into John Monroe's (William Windom) neighborhood. Paul brings John a bag of eggs and sugar and confesses his wife was the one who threw a boot into their window the night before over the Monroe's squeaky gate. Paul takes John into a Mayberry-esque town to meet a carpenter named Zeph Leggin (familiar western character actor Arthur Hunnicutt). Zeph spends his time, however, telling stories to John's daughter Lydia (Lisa Gerritsen) and older members of the community. The two exchange barbs of witticisms and John fantasizes a debate of rhetoric. Despite some elements of The Andy Griffith Show, the plot is rather weak.
