Okay, I guess
suse-0409810 March 2023
Listen, I know Netflix Documentaries are usually said to not be too good and/or biased. But to be fair I'm not here to get, like, all the details and information from only this source HOWEVER what I'm here fore is a basic understanding and rundown of things so I can see if it is worth my time to do my own research.

I didn't really watch the news around the time all of this went down so "GameStop" was only "that one American company that kinda crashed the Wallstreet or something" to me. This little documentary series was amazing to give me a quick overview of what happened, so that I now have a (admittedly probably very rough) picture of the whole thing.

It might have felt very subjective but I still appreciated the opportunity to save me a tremendous amout of time for research. Admittedly, this was the most comfortable option.

Missed some background
andrasrapli29 August 2023
Back then the short squeeze happened, I was also following this story in detail, so nothing in this movie was new to me. I still watched it with hopes that I would learn some background on the Melvin-Robinhood scandal. That didn't happen. It should've gone deeper into the so-called conspiracy theory, and I'm disappointed that the filmmakers seemingly wanted to avoid legal trouble.

But altogether, as a docu, it's well put together. The characters, atmosphere and the language is honest and reflects what I've seen on WSB back then.

Since the GME story was a unique and big one, I'd recommend this title to all retail investors who haven't heard about GameStop yet. But if you already know the story, this is a skip.

It's Gambling, Stupid
keikoyoshikawa21 April 2023
Is this a story of Davids vs Goliath? Sort of. On one side you have scrappy retail investors; on the other you have big hedge funds. And in 2021 these retail traders got together to use the system to make a lot of money. That as a result some hedge funds and brokerages lost money was just the icing on the cake. Unfortunately, many retail traders lost too.

The stock market is basically gambling, and it favors the big boys with deep pockets or connections. One of the greatest frauds is convincing average people to believe that they too can make money on the stock market. A few can make a lot, some can make a little, and many can lose everything. Stocks are an investment only if you are one of the big boys.

The system is gamed. For example, if you want real-time data that is not available elsewhere, you need to get access to a Bloomberg terminal, which costs 20,000 USD per year. Enter Reddit followed by retail brokerages like Robinhood. But before you think these are ways to close the gap, think again. They're just ways for gamblers to gamble even more.

While this documentary gives one viewpoint into the shorts squeeze on GameStop in 2021, sadly it also seems to worship the small-time gamblers who won big despite the odds. Sad, because while it is true that their winnings came from some big hedge funds, it is also true that much also came from other retail traders. In other words, there are no heroes here.

The winners ate both the rich and the not-so-rich. The point wasn't really to punish the big boys; it was to make money from gambling by basically card-counting, i.e. Look for trends, make bets, and get out before the entire feeding frenzy comes apart. No value was created, nothing useful to society was made; money simply changed hands. That's all.

Very Inaccurate, Watches More Like a Mockumentary
jasonpotilechio28 September 2022
I honestly do not think they did any other research than the facts that were provided to them by their corporate overlords.

Mostly talking points from MSM.

The conclusion that retail investors, those of us with the least amount of money, power, and corruption conspired to crash the economy only leads to a bigger question....

Why is is so detrimental to our society that people invest in a stock, GME, in this instance, and hold on to it for appreciation?

Absolutely dumbfounding that the principles of stock ownership do not apply, and are sinisterized.

UNLESS.....there may actually be more going on behind the curtains. You have to wonder...why this group of individual investors poses such a threat to society...the truth with set you free.

Oh yeah...Cramer is a tool. Who the hell can take this joke of a commentator seriously. If you question his motives, check out the video of him talking about how to manipulate stock prices and public sentiment.

He should be in jail not on cable "news".

Avoid the 1 star reviews
labajo-275334 October 2022
For all the people blasting the series with low ratings or one star I don't think they actually watched the entire series. This is worth a watch if you like documentaries or interested in investing or how markets work.

I had no bias going into the series. There may be more pieces to the puzzle but my takeaway was this was more about large hedge funds and big investment firms having a leg up on retail investors, these same companies can drive prices and fluctuate the market in a way retail investors can't, including actively betting on a company to fail, so retail investors are at a disadvantage, and then when retail investors push back collectively and gain traction, the rug is pulled out from under them by the platform they are using who would appear to be involved in a conflict of interest in the stock that's being pushed.

I never thought this painted retail investors as dumb. I thought this was more of a hit on the hedge fund managers and that big money will prevail and that the government doesn't seem equipped to handle or doesn't want to handle it. I thought it was commendable on what the retail investors and online users were able to achieve. The hedge funds have found "loopholes" for lack of a better term that to most of us would probably seem shady or manipulative. It even gets referenced that this is a classic David vs Goliath situation. I enjoyed it, thought it was compelling, and certainly not understanding of all the negativity in the reviews.

Only scratching the surface
Blumenkarl28 September 2022
The interviews have more cuts than an action movie and depict the "retail investors" as stupid and reckless.

One interviewee already gave a statement that his words were twisted and cut to fit the narrative of the film makers.

When they talk about the buy button being removed it's only ever about robinhood eventhough more brokers restricted buying than not.

Generic stock footage is used frequently throughout the series. It almost feels like a youtube video.

When they try to explain short selling which is basically the reason for the whole documentary they explain the absolute basics then say it is "complicated"....well thank you. Why did I watch 2 hours of your series?

They paint normal people buying a stock as market manipulators.

You'll learn nothing from this series.

Great Series Worth The Watch
cameron-127422 October 2022
Just finished the series I hadn't heard about while working out this morning. Does a great job of showing several different people who had to know they were trying to cheat the system and ended up hammered in the end. When the hysteria about the GameStop stock exploded people started jumping onto the trend to "Hammer Wall Street" but in the end most ended up losing their money. Try 401K and properly buying stock is the best way to move. Use this great series as a warning to those who only use Reedit and family that buying stock is dangerous idea if you do not know what you are doing. Enjoy it with the family.

Intentionally Misleading
adamwhitehurst-4383029 September 2022
This movie attempts to paint independent retail investors (average people) as traders coordinating to destroy the market. It ignores the fact that hedge funds and market makers continue to exploit loopholes to defraud retail investors of billions of dollars, while destroying legitimate companies (such as through death spiral financing, cellar-boxing, and under-reported swaps). These are the same people responsible for the Great Financial Crisis, using the same tricks, because they were never held accountable. Instead, average people were made to bail them out.

The movie conveniently neglects to mention that this is an ongoing situation in which the "big fish" are still trapped, and that leads to the goal of the whole "documentary": To mislead you into thinking that the whole "GameStop Saga" has concluded. It hasn't. That's what the GME movement is about: Register your shares in your name and prove that Wall Street has produced counterfeit shares.

Money and Mob Mentality
jenniferp9262 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Initially how wall street takes advantage of average American investors, and how the average American investor got revenge on wall street.

Then it was a look at how Keith Gill misled average investors to profit off this giant scheme by using GameStock stock, Robinhood, and Reddit to make a ton of money for himself.

Then it was a look at how Robinhood's founders did the same thing by taking advantage of their own users.

Everyone is trying to take advantage of others to make money for themselves. That's the bottom line. Everyone is just trying to do it in the smartest way they can. It's a sad but interesting look of human behavior surrounding money and mob mentality.

Pile of trush
sjaman-7021229 September 2022
Garbage. I never review anything but this pile of garbage forced my hand. This thing is so inaccurate and portrays what has happened so poorly that it almost feels like it was paid for by hedge funds to spread disinformation.

If you're interested in the whole Gamestop mess that took place and continues to do so, this is not where you want to start or even finish. Better off avoided altogether. The makers of this should be ashamed.

Netflix has really shot themselves in the foot with this one. They're portraying retail investors as the danger to the financial system. Meanwhile people are just buying a stock they like and holding it. If that's causing the system to falter, clearly the system was built so very wrong.

Quit playing games(top) with my heart
kosmasp1 October 2022
No pun intended - and actually this is less a Backstreet Boys hit we get here and more a money thing. So less about love I reckon. Although of course a lot of people who did try or got onto the Gamestop train, did so because they had a heart for Gamestop ... or maybe they just hated the rich enough (too).

Now I am surprised by the low score, but apparently some are not really satisfied by the content or rather the fact that certain things are omissed by the show. I had heard about this while it was happening, but I did not know the whole scope of it. I feel the show does try to do it as much justice as possible - again no pun intended.

It is three episodes long/short and maybe people start to get fed up with those docu series ... there may be a bunch of reasons. I don't think this deserves such a low score - will only solidify a low score for my review I suppose, but if so .. well so be it.

I was entertained and informed enough ... but that is me.

Warning: Spoilers
Followed all of this as it unfolded on 4chan and reddit. Notice how none of the one stars admit that this was one big joke. There was no righteous indignation by the main players at being personally impacted by the 2008 financial meltdown. Just some average or below average intelligence FOMO chasers. This series is way too kind to the majority of people caught up in WSB.

And the fact that so many are on here clutching their pearls is hilarious.

The fact is is that WSB was a product of the pandemic and people with too much tiem on their hands.

"WallStreetBets users' trading style closely resembles gambling more than investing, it is worth exploring the boundary between investor and gambler. Statman (2002) investigated the shared kind rage of those who trade stocks and those who play the lottery. He WallStreetBets suggests that regular stock trading and playing the lottery are rooted in 1) belief that we're above average, 2) lofty financial aspirations, 3) motivation by fear and hope, and 4) an enjoyment of playing the game. Additionally, Mizrach and Weerts studied trading activity in an online chatroom where they claim that the traders in the chatroom "ignored many of the lessons from their finance classes" because "they trade very frequently" and "made no attempt to diversify," much like the WallStreetBets subscribers."

Excellent Documentary About A Cult
bacchus-3245728 September 2022
The GME saga is certainly an interesting one, especially the side of the dimwitted bagholders that created their own version of a cargo cult. It's truly incredible to see the formation of conspiracy theories akin to Q-Anon being created by those without even a tenuous grasp of basic economics. The conviction that the "Apes" have is remarkable, their willingness to throw their life savings down the drain for a failing video game pawn shop is truly something to behold. At the very least, this is a well told cautionary tale that warns of the dangers of betting your financial wellbeing on fiction, conspiracy theories, confirmation bias, and internet cults.

Low effort money grab
tristan-hembree29 September 2022
The whole thing felt like some sort of low effort attempt to capitlize on the Gamestop craze. As someone who works in finance I was annoyed at the how many things were not entirely accurate, misleading, or just plain wrong. I watched this wanting to know more about the people involved and more about not only what happened during the short squeeze from January 2021 but wanting to know more about what is currently happening with Gamestop and was dissapointed on both fronts. There former was poorly explained and instead I had to suffer through memes that were shoehorned in for fan service and the latter non-existent. No mention of the direct registration movement, how a small group of investors currently own 55% of the free float (and growing) of a multi-billion dollar company, or any analysis into the realistic economic impact. I wish I hadn't wasted my time and am writing this in the hopes that it saves someone else hours of their life that would be better spent other ways. I honestly can't imagine who would get anything out of this series and struggle with identifying who the target audience even is because it sure isn't "people who want to know more about the Gamestop saga".

Its really unseen situation
Woldmack5 February 2023
Many people faced with many situations that people live or lived in their daily life when using the trade or investment world. Gamestop is different one, I understood. This is not a similar situation, there is different dynamics in this game. Maybe I can say that the stock market is not always a comfortable place for those who play guarded and loaded :). Also, this documentary need to watch by every person who have a stock market investment or any investment.

One side also have important message on this documentary: Power of social media, I think this subevent is the main subject for the occurence of Gamestop situation.

Ps: Netflix documentaries goes very well I really recommend some of them, last times when I use Netflix I prefer documentaries instead of mini movies, etc.

Not for knowing what happened, but for mild entertainment
dawitfikadu28 September 2022
I have no horse in this race but I was active on the wsb and superstonk subreddits to know they didn't present the whole thing. First off I just hate when documentaries and movies like the big short assume that people would lose interest if they explained things like shorting, margin calls or any other things that are central to the story. I don't want a chef or Margot Robbie or some distraction to be fed the critical information that I need for understanding the documentary. Secondly the interviews in this 'documentary' in particular makes Liam Neeson's action scenes look like a one take cinematic masterpiece. They are so chopped up they are the equivalent of a ransom note. Like let the guy speak for a minute would you? Third even though I can't definitively say this documentary is biased to the one side, it sure seemed like they omitted or brushed past lots of relevant details especially surrounding Robinhood and the big banks. I don't know if they interviewed some people to represent the day traders and redditors and they chose the guy who would be a clear opposite in contrast to the Wall Street guys or what but I cringed watching that interview and thought this guy must be hired or the video highly edited.

I don't live in the US and have never participated in anything resembling a stock market and I could clearly see this needed a lot of input before airing. Don't watch this to know about the GameStop saga. The best thing about this documentary is that if you suffer from insomnia this really helps you get some good nap right infront of your tv. It also creates a conducive environment to just leave it on and have sex with your partner. In some ways this documentary is one step backward for documentary film making but one giant leap in therapy.

Bias
pupsandflowersandluv29 September 2022
I would equate "Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga" to a documentary made about Casey/Kaylee Anthony that omitted the evidence found in the trunk of Casey's car, did not mention Casey's behavior following the disappearance of her daughter, and was written by Casey Anthony herself. For anyone remotely familiar with this infamous case, you get the picture? Such a misleading documentary with essentially all of the evidence omitted would of course skew the story itself, but having the storyline dictated by Casey herself? You can be sure the information provided will be biased. Would you trust the information provided in a documentary about a murder written by the prime suspect? No?

This is what "Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga" is. A documentary outlining events with key details removed, created and bolstered by individuals with not only an extreme bias, but also intentional ignorance of the totality of the facts. If you're looking for tangible fact, this documentary is not a source you should look to.

I always gather information from a variety of sources whenever I decide to read up on an event/topic. This ensures that I do not succumb to bias and am able to form my own independent opinion. If you would like to get more of the facts and form an opinion for yourself, I would recommend giving "The Diamond Handbook" a read. Just google "The Diamond Handbook Reddit" and you will find it.

MSM hit job
bcford29 September 2022
The makers missed the point of the whole movement and who is to blame for the current situation. No mention of the current driver behind the movement (Superstonk subreddit) or the never before seen move by retail investors to direct register their shares and pull them off the market to prevent abusive short selling by hedge funds. It's almost as if this documentary was made or influenced by those in power that have something to lose if the little man succeeds. Any authentic look at the GameStop saga must at it's heart center around the primary motivation to fight corruption in the system and take on these global financial powers, not the "Eat The Rich" mentality this documentary pitches. This story is far from over and will not end until people at the center of the corruption in the financial world are held accountable.

Money GRAB
illcivichbu29 September 2022
This movie is clearly just trying to capitalize on the current movement for financial freedome in the GME saga. The facts in this movie are soo FAR OFF its just pathetic. While it may hit the mark on a few things (What Short Selling Is, what a Market Maker is, etc) it misses the root issue by a LONG SHOT.

The director and staff have cut up interviews to grab pieces out of context to spin a narrative that puts the movement in the wrong light.

TBH, even if you just are bored and looking for something to watch, just choose something else that would actually be funny/informative/creative instead of this!

Eh very low effort
warejtom29 September 2022
It was not entertaining simply because they didn't try very hard. The mockumentary category would accept this as a comedy but it seemed too serious for that so I'm not sure what they were really trying to say. It may have gone over better had the creators done their due diligence.

Why did I fall asleep? Well because it was unexciting. Not to say it was calming because I'm an insomniac and it was night time so I will add that while, yes, I fell asleep, it was because my brain didn't want to witness any more poorly created content, not because it was night time when I watched this atrocity.

Really though why did they make this film in this way?

Disjointed, impossible to watch
lyndarobertson-4963330 September 2022
I'm retired. I used to be an economics professor, so I thought it would be fun. I usually like movies about stocks or the economy. This thing was a waste of time. And Cramer? Everybody knows he's a paid talking head.

It seems like it was written to be some kind of propaganda. No story, just disjointed nonsense. Certainly not done by anyone who understands Wall Street or the economy. Or maybe just liars?

Perhaps the hedge fund Ponzi Boys had an interest here? I'll bet they really laughed when they made the "clueless" retail guy so stupid. But they disrespect all regular Americans.

It doesn't even really deserve 2 stars. A mess.

skylarhergenahn29 September 2022
Why make a documentary about a saga that has yet to finish. Never did they mention DRS which is taking over and will lock the free float in a year. They also vilified retail investors making them out to seem dumb when in reality people like criand probably researched the stock and the market in general for days on end cumulatively. They would have you believe that hedge fund managers are the good guys and not the retail traders that were fighting against unethical market behaviors such as naked shorting and failing to deliver shares.

Netflix just keeps putting out worse and worse and this documentary was the epitome of garbage.

Poorly researched documentary
ymvnvgpgq29 September 2022
Long story short.... Positiv
  • first time I heard the real voice of RC :0)

Negativ.

  • Retail investors are portrayed as idiots
  • Nothing about FTDs (as far as I remember)
  • Nothing about DRS movement
  • Nothing about the DTC split fraud
  • Nothing about the extensive written DDs and research on Reddit Superstonk
  • Nothing about the Subreddit Superstonk
  • DFV was portrayed as a calculated stock market gambler - from my point of view
  • Nothing about Dr. T. "N..., short and Greedy: WS failure to deliver"
  • To much about the RH guys :0)
  • Nothing about the scope of GameStop reorganization and restructurization

Finally, the documentary is made to tell the viewers that it was a one-time story, that it is over and you should stay away from it. There were still some retail investors shown, who have lost a lot of money.....Status today. But I think they were all hodlers ;0) I can't say when the series was produced, but a lot of important information is just missing. Probably so wanted or just not up to date?

Complete misrepresentation of everything
branderpool2 October 2022
The content is such a wild fabrication of actual facts. It feels like fear, uncertainty and doubt - to turn people away from the actual movement. There are numerous curated documents available to ANYONE, yet I feel none of the court documents, official complaints, and memos were never even considered when making this. Don't waste your time. You're better off giving your wife's boyfriend a message or access to your bank account. At least some people will be happy with the results, unlike this screen garbage. I implore you to not bother seeing this and instead look into the ape movement for yourself.
