Most of the jockeys in this show are struggling and it's a hard life when you're losing, or can't get mounts. All it takes is getting on one good horse, and you can achieve fame, get noticed and start getting a bunch of mounts. Easier said than done.
Joe Talamo, Kala Stra and Brandon Meier are three kids featured on his show learning this, and veterans like Aaron Gryder and Jon Court don't have it easy, either, as we see. It's a tough life. There is no set salary; you only survive if you race and win. The pressure is terrible, as it is shown on this episode.
At least the cocky Talamo, brought down by a losing steak and dates with the stewards for rough rides, decides it is time to get some words of wisdom from a veteran jock, so he goes to see Mike Smith....and learn.
Earlier, we had seen the competitiveness of Smith and his live-in girlfriend, jock Chantal Sutherland. Even when the pair go out for a nice dinner, Smith is making bets with her at the restaurant table, trying to win money. I think that part was staged, however.
