I appreciated it more than enjoyed it

I have watched a lot of short films over the past few months and have seen several animations where shapes and music are played out with no plot other than to see the dance of shapes in space in time to music. I have also seen plenty of stop-motion animation and am always impressed by the skill and patience needed to not only deliver such projects, but to be able to see things as they will move even though you can only see them a frame at a time while they are being developed. These two things came together here in this short film which is much more of an art project than it is a "film".

The music (which is a little repetitive after a while) plays throughout while various shapes and objects manoeuvre around in the space we see. There is not really a reason for this but there are patterns and these are engaging as they flow. The film is also inverted; it may take you a minute to really realize this (as it did I) but something will strike you as odd about the angle you are viewing it versus the position of sky and shadow etc. If you flip your screen upside down you will see clearer that we are looking at a work surface with some mirrors apparently employed and indeed it is a surprise just how ordinary it appears when you do this (so probably don't do it for long).

The impact of this all though is that the film is visually interesting. Technically I know it is impressive but it is hard to appreciate the work because it is hard to really get a total understanding of what is going on since so much is occurring and things are constantly changing. As an end result I have to say that I appreciated this film for what it did with shapes and perspective but probably didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked, since it was more an experience of a piece of art than it was watching a film. Watch it as such and there is much to engage the brain and eye, but what it does it does throughout, so there isn't really a build or payoff to it if you are looking for such (which I sort of was).
