Season Three Review
southdavid4 January 2023
Season three of "Motherland" was in the Guardian's top TV of 2021 list. I had to wait though, as though the first two seasons were on Netflix, the third did not arrive until late this year, ahead of the Christmas special. It was another excellent run, well worthy of its place on that list.

As Amanda (Lucy Punch) struggles to come to terms with her divorce another one of the case, Kevin (Paul Ready) also discovers that his marriage is at an end. Julia's (Anna Maxwell Martin) Mother Marion (Ellie Haddington) moves in with her, and she employs a builder Garry (Robbie Gee) to make modifications. Ignored by her husband still, she starts to develop feelings for Garry. Meg (Tanya Moodie) reveals her own potentially bad news that, temporarily, puts everything else into perspective.

It's harder writing reviews for comedy than it might be for other things, as comedy is so subjective. I could write about Julia's ability for farce, or Liz's amazing put downs but if you don't find the show funny, then it's not worth much. It's actually quite emotional at times, as well as funny. Amanda is a little more than just an antagonist this time, she's still putting on Marion quite a bit, but you see her struggling with her breakup and meet her mother, played by Joanna Lumley, which explains a lot about her personality. She also has a brief encounter with Kevin this season, which is then mined for the last episode's humour.

Good stuff.

A good end to the third series.

Amanda has organised a charity fundraiser, which doubles up as her surprise birthday party, Julia is desperately trying to make something happen with her builder Garry.

It's been a pretty decent third series, maybe not as good as the first two, but there habe definitely been some good moments, this concluding episode was definitely bittersweet, tragedy for both Julia and Amanda, good news maybe for one or two others.

I watched, waiting for Anne to finally tell Amanda straight, she's been taken for a ride the whole time, we learn that everyone finally has a breaking point, finally Anne plucks up the courage, it's that best moment.

Lots of jokes about Kevin's prominent equipment, so funny, the look on Anne's face, classic moment.

It's a very funny end to the third series, is this the end for the show? It feels like it's reached its natural conclusion.

8/10.
