Colourful and entertaining, if a little predictable in story

'The Pink Panther' Pinto Pink" (1967)

Opening thoughts: All the previous years' batches were on the whole very solid, with a very high number of good cartoons and mostly more than that. Only a few disappointed. 'Pinto Pink' is not one of the best 1967, a pretty solid year for the Pink Panther series with 'Pink of the Litter' being a major standout, Pink Panther cartoons, with some of the predictability working against it. It is however also very colourful and entertaining, with a huge amount to like, even when the series was not at its best there was still a huge amount to like about a vast majority of the cartoons (though the mid-late 70s cartoons generally were majorly flawed).

Bad things: The story is simple, not a problem as all the stories in Pink's cartoons are, but also rather predictable and drags a tad in the middle. The falling down the cliff gag merely raises a small smile.

Due to that it has been done so many times in the Roadrunner cartoons that at the same time it is a kind of tiresome gag.

Good things: Otherwise, the rest of the gags though are very clever and funny with good timing. The animation is elegant and colourful, with some very detailed and not too complicated drawing. The music sticks in your head for a long time and in a good way, the jazzy style suits it wonderfully and the theme tune is still worthy of its classic status.

Pink is a cool and likable character as always, with natural comic timing, but this is one of the few times where he is (slightly) overshadowed by his supporting character, here a very sly and quite hilarious horse, who gets its own way at the end.

Concluding thoughts: All in all, predictable but also colourful and entertaining.

8/10.
