The kid is completely unllikeable, annoying even. Then again, this is not the type of short where characters are supposed to be "likeable" or "relatable", nor with a moralizing lesson to be find here.
That being said, I kinda was rooting for the apathetic school counselor. He was a rather pitful character. The scenes basically showed he didn't have anything else in his life other than that online casino game he was obsessed with, while very little is shown about the life of the angsty teen. (Probably in order to avoid the usual pathos, or in order to avoid portraying his behavior as something justified)
The title is apt: There is a "dead end" sense in the overall short, as if the lives of both main characters are going nowhere, and probably never will. Kinda empty, but probably that was the point.
But seriously, the angsty teen was a douche, plain and simple. Nothing remotely sympathetic about him.
