What?!

I thought the prison was shut down. Where were the prisoners being smuggled from? I'm confused. Let me get this straight. The villain was being highly paid by her "guests" to smuggle them out of an abandoned prison via shark torpedo to but gave them a lavish meal in an opulent dining room hidden beneath the prison first?

Very creepy and far from old

Of all the forty episodes of 'The Scooby Doo Show', "The Creepy Case of Old Iron Face" was one of the top 5 episodes that stayed longest in the memory. Not just because it was from a child perspective one of the creepiest of the show and always had one of the more interesting mysteries of the later episodes, but especially because of its iconic villain. So much so he returned in cyber form in 'Cyber Chase' and the villain in 'Frankencreepy' seemed heavily inspired by him.

"The Creepy Case of Old Iron Face" still holds up brilliantly. It is not just a contender for the best episode of a very hit and miss Season 3 and one of the few great episodes from it, but it is still one of my favourites of the show and a standout of the whole franchise. Seeing as 'The Scooby Doo Show' is my second favourite Scooby Doo show after the original, that is a big compliment. Here we have a great setting (not many Scooby Doo episodes at this point had old prisons on an island as a setting), a really authentically creepy atmosphere that not many episodes of Season 3 had, some nice Shaggy and Scooby interaction, a fun and interesting mystery and of course Iron Face himself.

So much to love here. There were a couple of things that advanced quite a bit in Season 3 from when the show first started. One was the animation, which seemed more polished with more vibrancy and atmosphere, more exotic locales and the drawing seemed smoother and more fluid. All that is obvious in "The Creepy Case of Old Iron Face". The advancement in the music is obvious still too, more variety and more of its own identity and while there are some nice familiar nods to the music in the previous incarnations they're not repetitious or overused. The theme song is very catchy still.

Really loved the setting, which helps set the episode apart as no other episode of the show had this setting and certainly not one with this much of a heebie jeebie vibe. It is a very formidable location, one of the creepiest ones for 'The Scooby Doo Show' and one of the creepiest of the whole franchise up to this point of it. What sets "The Creepy Case of Old Iron Face" apart even more is Iron Face himself, one of the few 'The Scooby Doo Show' villains that burned in my memory immediately after first viewing. And to this day on multiple re-watches he is still unforgettable and definitely in the top 5 of the show's most iconic villains, plus he is one of the few Season 3 villains to have a back-story. His introduction is quite freaky and the interaction with Shaggy and Scooby is both entertaining and suspenseful. The perpetrator's identity may not have been the biggest of shocks but the motive/scheme was clever and not what was expected.

From start to finish the writing entertains and intrigues, with a charming beginning and coda, many splashes of endearingly silly humour, a real sense of unease and a well executed ending that was not too predictable and was plausible. The mystery is well paced and atmospheric and doesn't feel routine or over-familiar. The gang are on good form, especially Shaggy and Scooby, and so are the voice actors.

Concluding, brilliant and one of the best 'The Scooby Doo Show' episodes. 10/10.

The idiot returns that keeps wanting the main photo for this classic episode as the back of the villain at a well lol. You are Absolutely clueless at what makes good episode photos.
