Danny, a young slob with sincere socialist views, works in a D-I-Y megastore and is stealing copper wire from a power station to repay a gambling debt at precisely the same moment that Veronica, fashion writer for a local rag, runs out of petrol nearby. Both are standing on a power grid and are hit by lightning, 'swapping' bodies as a result. The apparent Veronica, inhabited by Danny's personality, is found and rushed to hospital, being reunited with partner Jay but Danny's outlook inhabits her being, shocking Jay with her crudity. On return to work she resolves to make her column more socially aware and re-visits Danny's workplace to seek him out via colleagues Fiona and Pete. Danny is initially amnesiac from his ordeal, only grasping the connection by seeing Veronica's column in the paper but dares not return home because he is in arrears to the landlord. Thus Fiona and Veronica's visit to the flat to find him yields no result.

Danny, still inhabiting Veronica's body, does not impress editor Bill with the new socialist offerings and the real Veronica is ejected from the office and rejected by best friend Siobhan because she looks like Danny. 'Veronica' calls on D-I-Y workmates Fiona and Pete to locate Danny but they are perplexed by her motives and a visit to a Missing Persons office leads to a run-in with the cops. It gets worse when the false Veronica, drunk on champagne, denounces a fashion show and reveals Siobhan's boyfriend's infidelity. Danny's visit to Jay to explain matters is just as useless but Fiona and Pete hit on a random clue, which could help. Jay's desire for sex with his supposed beloved does not.

After sex with Jay, Danny - still outwardly Veronica - rejects the advances of Ali, dumped by Siobhan after the confession, and tells Pete and the whole office the truth. Jay and Siobhan, who have met the supposed impostor of Danny, feel the pair have actually met but mentally swapped identities and have their friend put in a mental hospital, where the lady who looks like Danny has also been committed for the same reason. Their dumb shrinks fail to make the connexion and the false Veronica, to secure release, plays along, effecting parental reconciliation and a return to work , though Jay's marriage proposal is something else. Fortunately Fiona and Pete, having read the newspaper account of the fateful night and weighed up the evidence, begin to hit on the truth.

Whilst Pete is convinced by 'Veronica's' story Jay can only think of their impending wedding but 'she' only has eyes for Fiona. 'Danny' meanwhile is strong-armed by his crooked creditors into a street robbery from which 'Veronica' saves him and later on the roles are reversed when 'he' rescues 'her' from a row with Jay at the engagement party, driving them both back to the power station, where another storm restores both to their former bodies. However, the experience has left both wanting more than their old lives...
