Pretentious, oddball Powers fantasy
lor_28 September 2020
Jim Powers brings the goofy element of his famous "Perverted Stories" series to a more conventional porn movie "The Dinner Party". Result is strange to say the least.

It begins with P.J. Sparxx and pal Chelsea Ryan admiring a guy in the distance, giving girl talk that sounds more like guys shooting the breeze about the opposite sex. The guy's limo pulls up to them by the sidewalk and smoothie Steve Drake invites them for a ride -Chelsea convincing P.J. that it's a good idea.

Almost immediately it becomes clear that Steve has the power to mesmerize people, which he exerts for the rest of the show. It begins with him getting the girls to strip naked in the back seat and masturbate. Not content just to watch he helps out later with a dildo.

Drake and his butler Tom Chapman visit the girls separately to invite them to a dinner party, as well as service them sexually on the visits. In a corny scene, Jon Dough and his wife China Lee have car trouble and no cell phone, so they head for the nearest house to phone for help, perhaps the dumbest stock scene in so many porn and especially horror movies. Chapman answers the door and is brusque with them but smoothie Drake rolls out the red carpet and before you know it having China give him a blow job. When Dough finds them going at it, Drake instantly uses his power to have Jon join in for an impromptu d.p. with China.

A scene talking to himself in a mirror implies that Drake answers to a higher power (perhaps the Devil, given the imagery of a skull and skeleton as dining room decorations at Drake's house).

Final 25 minutes of the movie is the dinner party orgy, reminiscent of "Perverted Stories" content especially since a regular of that Powers series -Dave Hardman -shows up naked wearing a mask just as the dinner party begins. The "main entree" for the evening is busty Sandi Beach, laid out nude on the table for the guests to fondle and have sex with, described alternately by host Drake as "red meat" or later "pink meat".

What does it all mean? The result of some Faustian bargain? Some extremely vague reference to Oscar Wilde's "Picture of Dorian Gray", considering the talking to the image in the mirror scene plus Drake's character being named Dorian?

No, it's just Powers titillating the viewer with absurdity plus gonzo sex, his stock in trade.
