THE LINEUP – Cop Shooting- 1954
During the 1950's there were two Police series that rose to the top. DRAGNET and THE LINEUP were both solid Police procedurals that showed how the everyday life of a Detective was. The LINEUP ran between 1954 and 1960 with a total of 200 episodes produced. The leads were played by Tom Tully and Warner Anderson as a pair of San Francisco Police Detectives. This particular episode is the 11th episode of the series.
Two San Francisco uniform cops, Hugh Beaumont and William Murphy are having a coffee and talking about Murphy's upcoming marriage. They get a call over the prowl car radio about a holdup at a bar a few blocks over. They race to the scene and witnesses point to a nearby alley. The hold-up artist had fled that way with the robbery proceeds.
Beaumont and Murphy turn down the alley and see a man running. They quickly chase the suspect down but the man ducks into a warehouse. The two cops follow with Murphy in the lead. Several shots ring out and Murphy goes down in a heap. Beaumont manages to get off a shot as the suspect exits out another door and disappears into the crowd.
An ambulance is summoned and Murphy is rushed to emergency in critical condition. Needless to say the Police pull out all the stops to find the shooter of one of their own. The usual round up of lowlifes etc is quickly set in motion. Nothing is turned up from the lineup of these criminal types. Word is put out on the street that any help from the public would be appreciated.
Detectives Warner Anderson and Tom Tully draw the assignment. They go over the warehouse for clues. They also question Murphy's partner, Hugh Beaumont about anything he might remember. From Beaumont's description of events they realize the shooter was left handed. This of course helped lessen the number of suspects.
A look through the "just released files" comes up with a possible gunman. A look now at the known associate's files comes up with another lead. Then they catch a real break when a street contact of Tully's shows up. He identifies the man, John Bryant, from the just released file. Everyone who might know where Bryant is hiding is rousted for a friendly chat. A woman who works at a local café tells the Detectives that she has a movie date that night with Bryant.
The Police stake out the movie theatre and wait. Sure enough, the suspect pulls up in a stolen car and parks. Tully and Anderson put a not so friendly grab on Bryant and slap the cuffs on.
Turns out the wounded cop is making a recovery and will be well enough to get married.
This show is growing on me the more episodes I see.
