Race for Death.
Sleepin_Dragon23 January 2020
A cyclist is killed during a race, clutching fibres from a cycling vest, discovering the vest probes to be incredibly difficult.

I must be honest, I am loving this series so far, there is a somewhat more serious tone to the episodes, a little of the humour has perhaps gone, some aren't happy, but I think it's way better.

I should have mentioned in a previous episode how utterly brilliant Aude Legastelois is as Madeleine, she has fitted into the show so effectively that you'd hardly know she was a new addition. She has huge presence and bucket loads of charisma.

I also get the impression that they have toned down Ruby somewhat from the last series, she seems a little calmer.

Jack is going to be much missed, he's better than ever right now, but at least he's met Anna. Only one more episode for him, makes me sad, Ardal has been great.

Episode 9.3

Warning: Spoilers
Jack Mooney and his team investigate the death of a cyclist during an island race. The body was found in a ravine with torn a piece of cloth in his hand.

When one of the members of the same racing team is found hiding some steroids. He immediately becomes a suspect.

It was a tad unfortunate that the BBC daytime detective drama The Mallorca Files also had a mystery regarding a cyclist a few weeks earlier. There were some shared similarities. Steroids and someone posing as a double.

An enjoyable mystery, again this serious has dialled down the silliness from the previous season. Although when Mooney recounts how the murder was covered up, it appears rather outlandish.

Another good one, but they marched the ending.

Warning: Spoilers
I have really enjoyed the ninth season of "Death in Paradise" so far. Yes, the tone of the stories seems to be more serious, but in my opinion this is very nice change of direction.

" La Murder Le Diable'" was an awesome episode, "A Murder in Portrait" good enough, "Tour De Murder" is a bit better than the previous one, but has still has some faults.

Let's start with the good aspects, shall we?

. The episode looks and sounds great. The acting's good as usual. Aude Legastelois is very charismatic as Madeleine, Shyko Amos' Ruby is more toned down here and it works better for the character and Tobi Bakare again shows some real maturity as JP. Ardal O'Hanlon has been a delight as Mooney, so sad he's going leave the show in the next episode.

. The murder mystery is very compelling with clever twists, turns and solid character work. The humor's also very charming and welcome.

But...

. The subplot about the relationship between Anna and Mooney is sweet, but sadly does not seem to go anywhere for a long time of this episode. I like that they are buliding up the relationship, but the relation needs to go somewhere for that matter, right?

. The biggest issue however was the solution. It's, to put it mildly, ridiculous. How the murderers- Inez and Anton-covered their crime was so laughable that it made my mouth drop in disbelief.

Overall, still a good one.

Tour De Murder

Warning: Spoilers
With some nice little tweaks to the standard DIP format, this is another good episode, albeit one that points to the departure of Jack at some point.

Madeline still seems a bit wooden to me, but perhaps will grow on me in time. Thankfully Ruby is a bit more toned down these days.

Another good episode overall.

Another standard DiP
chrisrs12328 March 2020
Your classic DiP 'murder on a sports team' episode but done well. Sadly unconvincing awkward English romance subplot continues too though, building to Ardal O Hanlon's exit. It's nice to see JP get a little focus this week though.

Jack and Anna?
ygwerin123 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Saint-Maire's Island racing team is involved in what appears to be simply a tragic accident. When one of the members body is found in the river, adjacent to a section of the races course.

However when the scene is investigated, evidence is found that serves to throw doubt on this assumption.

DI Mooney feels that JP's handling of an investigation, shows sufficient merit that he considered him worthy of promotion.

Jack Mooney asked his girlfriend to consider staying on in the island, so they can spend more time together.

She has to leave but makes him a suggestion, that causes him to ponder his possible future.

I rarely catch Episodes of this show as they are broadcast on BBC 1, normally simply catching up with it via other channels. So I am reviewing this Episode at something of a disadvantage, as I haven't kept upto date with the shows progression.

This is therefore the first time that I have seen the new female police officer Madeleine Dumas. Such that I really cannot make up my mind, on either the character or the actress until I have seen more of her.

I have seen the young WPC Ruby before, though I can't recall which episodes she is in. And I really can't remember my impression of her character, and how she fits into the team.

I had seen stuff online about DCI Jack Mooney's love interest, but this is the first time that I have actually seen anything of it.

I like Nina Wadia but this is the first time that I have, actually seen her in any kind of dramatic role. She is much more familiar to me in comedic roles, seeing her first in the TV Comedy Goodness Gracious Me.

I have of course seen the character J.P. as he has been involved in the show for some time, developing into a great integral part of the police team.

X is for Xavier
safenoe15 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is the second last episode featuring DI Jack Mooney, as he ponders the future of his romance with Anna (Nina Wadia). I like the authenticity of this modern-day relationship, with Anna representing a female that isn't typical of the lithe and leggy blondes that populate our TV screens. I like the fact that Anna is kind of plus size, dumpy. Jack is also a bit tubby, so very encouraging to see a real relationship.

Here Jack and his team investigate the mysterious death of Xavier, a hotshot cyclist. Hopefully the cyclists in this episode weren't rude to pedestrians by "ding-dinging" at 1000 decibels on the footpath for pedestrians.

Finally, we see Catherine performing her mayoral duties! She was elected Mayor a few seasons ago, but inexplicably the focus on her mayoralty has been unfortunately scant.

Ridiculous Ending
zombiemockingbird8 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I love this show, but the end of this episode is completely absurd. A woman impersonates a young man in a cycle race, wearing a fitted Lycra outfit and no one notices she has hips and breasts? Totally unbelievable.

Tragedy
jay-3740928 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The side plots of tis episode are what hold this episode up. Jack and Anna's blossoming romance is rather sweet, and seeing JP take initiative and make a good judgement call show this series upping its game. However, the main story, the murder, was tired and ridiculous. A rather busty woman taking on the identity of a young athletic male cyclist was too silly to be taken seriously. DI Mooney pointed out that it was the minor details that led to the murderers being caught. Not once did he mention that not one of the 30 odd competitors, plus spectators, plus race officials, etc. noticed that one of the men had a very sizable bust. He even went on to say that she had the same build as the boy she impersonated. On the plus side, Ruby was not the annoying screw up she has been in all previous episodes. Maybe the arse kicking the commissioner gave her after last week's mess has finally done some good.
