Not every fan of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' likes Starlight Glimmer and Trixie individually. As for me, both have significantly grown on me. Loved Starlight in Season 5 but it took me time to get used to her reform. Didn't care for Trixie initially, but she is one of those characters that became funnier and more interesting with each episode she appeared in. It was obvious too that in their previous appearances with them interacting together that the two gel beautifully.

That is evident in "A Horse Shoe In". Which to me is a great episode and one of the better and more entertaining outings of the uneven Season 9 (a season with some great episodes but few on top tier level, and with some average and less ones but few misfires). A significant improvement over the underdeveloped and bland previous episode "Dragon Dropped" in a rare instance of Rarity doing little for me. Starlight and Trixie are both great characters here in "A Horse Shoe In", love their chemistry and it is nowhere near as predictable as one would think looking at the synopsis.

"A Horse Shoe In" has so many great things that outshine the very few (actually next to none strictly speaking) not so great things. Starlight, despite moments of tactlessness (like her line in regard of unintended good advice), is a character that has positives and negatives and her bottling up is relatable to me (it's only been in the past few years where it's been easier to open up and let things go). Trixie also has positives (that she has great comic timing and wit) and negatives (glimpses of arrogance and cluelessness), but thankfully the negative characteristics don't get too over the top mostly. The two once again gel so beautifully and play off each other in a way that is entertaining and charming.

Really liked the writing on the whole, Starlight and Trixie's banter is classic level and full of wit and intelligence, if not always tact. The story is full of energy and also loved its unpredictability and the constant keeping guessing vibe, the candidates were not obvious at all and the ending was a complete surprise (didn't see the result coming at all). Refreshing after seeing the show have some easily telegraphed and too neat endings with varied moral execution, especially in Seasons 8 and 9.

Moreover, the animation is terrific. Not just typically rich in background detail, very vibrant and atmospheric in colour and with character designs that never look awkward or ugly, but it is also very inventive. A lot goes on visually but it doesn't feel cluttered and is done imaginatively. The music is as dynamic and beautifully orchestrated as ever. The voice acting from Kelly Sheridan and Kathleen Barr is on point.

Both Starlight and Trixie have moments where they aren't always likeable when the former's lack of tact and Trixie's thoughtlessness get in the way occasionally, but this was not a continual problem.

Concluding, great and one of the better episodes of the final season. 9/10.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode mocks nepotism. It features Starlight Glimmer wanting to take on the role of head mare of the friendship school. It turns out Twilight really is going to take over for Princess Celestia. Well, I did look at the last episode. Starlight creates the role of vice mare to help her. Trixie wants to fulfill the role.

Probably the best part is that not only does Trixie not get the position, but none of the people Starlight interviews do! She and Trixie have it both their ways. Her friend Sunburst takes the mantle. I just love the facial expressions as always in this episode. This is a pretty unique lesson and I liked how it was unpredictable. It's so sad this is the last season. ****
