Was this first episode the best? Warning: Spoilers
Note: Most of my reviews contain spoilers, nevertheless, I always try that none of them can actually spoil any important surprise of the plot.

I was delighted the day that I saw this first episode, there was an interesting double plot happening at two different moments. On one side we have the tragic story of two lovers who can't get together and a parallel story happening maybe 50 years in the future when the two of them are now leaders to opposite Ninja factions.

It was a great double story, my only complain about this anime is that none of the following episodes was (In my opinion) as interesting and touching as this first one. Nevertheless, all the episodes in this anime are somewhere between good and excellent, and all of them have their own virtues and surprises, but this first episode is one of my all time favorites in Anime and TV in general.

One last recommendation: It would be interesting if you could see more than one version of this anime. For example, see a subbed version if you have already seen a dubbed version. Why? As I understand it, sometimes Japanese can have more that one possible translation. For example, the last phrase of the opening scene is sometimes translated as "die, my beloved, die" and sometimes something similar to "those who love each other, will die", so I recommend you to see more than one version to enjoy the possibilities.

That said, I am going to stop my review here and let you experience this episode by yourself.

Thanks for reading.
