Another well-written episode and fastly developed plot.Iconic moments and iconic episode. That was a contrasting two great mind with equal chances. But Kira handled fantastically this force-majeure situation.

A thriller episode done right
thiago_gvarela13 March 2022
There's so much twist and turns in this episode that just keeps you on the edge of your seat for the entire episode. Overcast really shows Kira's brilliance and ruthlessness in his quest for "Justice", a must see for sure!

The level of manipulation light used was amazing, and his solution felt rewarding whilst being unexpected his lies came off smoothly and really added a level of trust. Definitely death note at its best.

Rewatched this recently ,After 3 years and the feeling is still the same!

Warning: Spoilers
Light Yagami is the definition of cruelty, and i love it. From the beginning of the episode till the end ,slowly building up the tension and when you understand the context of the situation, you realise how brutal of a protagonist he is. He does not have great physical killing skills, swords or guns ,a perfect depiction of a silent killer. First killing off Ray Penber and now targetting his fiancée who is also a top tier FBI agent , ofcourse you have the intervention of Ryuk helping him out.

In the entire show this is the only part where if you are a die hard Light Yagami fan you are still not on his side ,pushing the boundaries of a character progression to new heights. Questioning if "GOD of the NEW WORLD" title actually fits him or not.

This is where Light Yagami became a character, very few characters in history have achieved such a brutal status. The writing is perfect although it is a bit of a convenience .It just works perfectly.

Peak Writing & Execution - My favorite Anime episode I've ever watched so far
riverhughes14 July 2023
I was on the edge of my seat the entire time while watching.

The buildup throughout works perfectly as the harrowing yet genius ending is revealed as Light shows the lengths of his manipulative power.

In all honesty I haven't seen such a mental and logistic battle executed with such class and intensity since I watched "Chicanery" of Better Call Saul.

Light is an awful person but I couldn't help myself be satisfied at his plans and execution throughout the rollercoaster that is this episode.

The fact this was 24 minutes long surprised me as I was entranced while watching and all sense of time left. This usually only happens with longer shows but this did so in such a short period of time.

Without a doubt my favorite of the series so far and a 10/10.

Recommend this to everybody & I would like to know of other shows with the same qualities.

The One That Hooked Me
coasteraddict-1679622 July 2023
From the beginning, Death Note was a show that had my full attention. By the second episode I was engrossed in the conflict and confident in its smart writing. However, I was yet to understand what made it one of the best anime, ever. This episode is what changed everything.

You will spend most of "Overcast" drawn in and captured by its back and forth dynamic and sense of urgency. It takes a simple situation and uses it to give viewers a look into what makes the different characters tick. This episode is full of character moments, and the ending is what solidifies who Light truly is. Beautiful, suspenseful, and tragic, this episode hooked me.

Anime at its peak!
The1FilmCritic28 November 2023
There is no epic fight, no epic rage sequence nor a tragic background story revealed in this episode, but it is still one of the most thrilling moments of anime ever!

This is the episode that settles death note for me as the greatest show of its genre.

I'm recently rewatching this series after 10 years and although I had forgotten almost everything (due to my young age back then, by the way) the last scene still remained in my memory.

I think it's the excellent execution that made the moment so remarkable. An intense tension is built up and held until the last second and in addition there comes the brilliant ost. In the end you just sit there in shock and question the goodness of our beloved main character for the first time.

Iconic episode!!

Well written episode; L establishes the war plan, Kira solves his own mistakes, and he won't take risks again for sure.

Awesome

Warning: Spoilers
An impressive episode from start to finish. First, divided between L concluding that the police are trustworthy and also Light thinking he could kill Raye's fiancée so easily. The way he manipulates people into doing the things he wants is scary. When he gets nervous and anxious about not knowing why she didn't die, it's terrifying what he could do to Raye's wife with his own hands. The final segment, with the agent passing right next to Light but not recognizing him because of the umbrella and also Raye's fiancée revealing her real name, is very well directed and edited. Finally, another innocent person killed by Kira's hands. Oh and it is also revealed that Light/Kira kills people who are merely suspected of crimes, that is, he himself creates his own sense of justice, since these people may not be guilty but innocent. Anyone who thinks Light/Kira is a hero has a problem in their head or is just a teenager who hasn't matured. Episode seven watched on March 5, 2024.

My two cents on this...
saadi-4242226 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Hear me out when I say this. Death Note has the perfect base plot, in fact one of the best out there, and very unique in terms of concept, story and symbolism. But what really bugs me in this episode is the below par execution of a character death which should have been more naturally and better executed.

Naomi Misora is a former FBI agent, and is shown to be a person of high intellect and intelligence, yet she is completely dumbfounded, brainfaded even, when she is having conversation with Kira. Either, she shouldnt have been portrayed as a former FBI agent with insane deductive skills (just 2 episodes prior) and now she is so easily manipulated and tricked by a high school student, who maybe a highly intelligent one, but still an amateur in front of an FBI agent. Yet, he spins the conversation in his favour out of absolutely nothing EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. (as if Death Note has also given him Godly Manipulative Powers) which takes away from the uniqueness of that character. It almost seems like the writer is forcefully trying to showcase Light as the Master Strategist, when realistically he should let the plot flow out naturally.
