After a financially disastrous year, renowned Irish horse breeder and trainer Aidan Doherty is selling his stables to wealthy neighbor Charlie Carrick's leading estate Firebrand, to emigrate to Australia. Old right hand Dermot Cahill fails to talk him out of it but hides the contract. Then arrives Ray Hogan to sell him a magnificent but apparently unmanageable stallion colt. And Jonah Price, a gentile youngster everyone assumes to look for a stable boy job, but interested in Aiden for a personal, crucial reason. Without prior experience, Jonah shows a talent with horses like Aiden's, and explains it.

Now Aidan nows he's Jonah's dad and the boy only admires him as a horse-trainer, he decides to go back in the business. Alas his license will be withdrawn the next day unless he repairs the stables and acquires three more horses. So he's desperate enough to accept dubious horses from even more questionable owners, at worrisome terms. Rival neighbor Carrick is determined to see Doughterty doesn't pass official Gerry McCann's inspection.

Jonah has set his mind on learning to ride races on his own colt. Aiden decides the animal is just too scared still. Jonah's English ma Lisa doesn't just answer his letter, she flew over waving Joah's poor report card, hell bent on taking him 'home' to Manchester. Jonah rather takes a lowly job at Firebrand. Aiden defends that choice, however against his feelings, to Lisa. Carrick's academically gifted daughter Sharon rebels too, equally determined to become a jockey, not go to university. The youngsters even consider running away together.

On his wedding day, Charlie Carrick offers bride Yoland a horse she may choose, with a lavish maximum price of 150.000 Euros. He sends Brett Hooper along to advise her, actually make sure it's no mere show-horse. After she helped Aidan nurse the local barn-owl Barney, he offers to come along. Charlie said he has urgent business in Dublin, but actually meets with former plumbing associate Timmy Healy to make in in mere hours a grand silver horse-racing charity cup in her honor. At the auction, Aiden suspects foul play involving a seasoned trader, and takes risks he can't afford. Meanwhile Jonah deals with the colt and grumpy Dermot's frustration.

When Aidan hears his friend Moira Sweeney is practically forced to sell out below her estate's value, he insists she waits till Saturday, when he hopes to win a hefty prize with Surise Bay, in a race against Carrick's new champion. Then Sunrise's owner Tim withdraws his horse. However Jonah also entered his colt, helped by Sheridan. Charlie makes Yolanda a Firebrand exclusive as vet. Aiden takes crazy risks. Next problem, the jockey. More surprises follow.
