Jumped the shark
Timothynorris4 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is where the Walton's jumped the shark. The introduction of Rose and her annoying grandchildren and the story lines around them make this episode and many that follow boring and ponderous.

The next two years of shows really drag and lead to the show's spiraling end.

Not As Bad As Others Say
annykins-2654218 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Oh come on people! I disagree with other reviewers. It's a well established fact that children who are abuse victims often act out as a cry for help, especially after a parent's death or separation. It's kind of funny to see these young-uns' hijinks after weeks of googly eyed teenagers and Mary Ellen's wooden war widow acting. This episode should have included more on the John-Boy MIA storyline which received only a glance. What happened to Rover the peacock and the dog Reckless' puppy? They might have been better companions for Jeffrey than the white laying hen. There is more background music that adds effect this time too. What prevails in this episode is the Waltons' timeless and recurring theme that TIME and LOVE really do heal all wounds.

Beginning of the end

The series should have ENDED before Rose came. The Waltons was a great show...until Rose came. I know that might sound mean. But I don't care. The show should have quit while it was ahead. The "Rose episodes" were NEVER as good as the previous ones.

Rose

I have more of a question, however I do agree, those kids just didn't work. Anyhow, everything I read says that Rose is Johns cousin, but in this episode when Rose is confessing to Olivia about her son and offers to leave Olivia remembers Rose staying with her and taking care of her when Olivia was sick as a small child. Is she Johns cousin that just so happened to take care of his future wife as a child? That seems to be a stretch. So is this just a mistake in the script?

Should Have Left Peggy Rea In Season 7
harliiwood28 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Peggy Rea showed up in Season 7: Ep. 1 The Empty Nest as Mrs. Borer, the landlady who showed Erin and Mary Ellen an apartment. But as Rose on The Waltons, I'm sorry, she got on my nerves.

In this episode, The Kinfolk, Rose lies and hides the truth about her alcoholic son, his abuse, and how terrible her grandchildren are, which is the reason they showed up in the first place...they desperately need a place to stay. The grandchildren lie, steal, smoke, steal a car, and ultimately nearly ruin the family's source of income. John wants to spank them and Lordy, I wish he had, but Rose said she couldn't bear to reprimand them after all they'd been through.

Even after repeated discussions with the adults about their behavior, these horrible children still continue to misbehave. They clearly have no home training and they are made aware by their grandmother, Rose, that this is their last stop or they'll have to go back to Boston and they didn't want that. Even knowing that their behavior might get them thrown out of the Walton Household doesn't improve their behavior. I found myself wanting to throw things at the TV over no one being able to do anything with them.

I do not care for the Rose character. Her behavior in this episode is both conniving and craven. When she returns in later episodes and tries taking over the house, changing the food they eat, etc. It just gets on my nerves. I can skip those episodes. I agree with the other reviewer that they should have simply ended the show when Olivia/Michael Learned left.
