Salute to Xena - A 25th Anniversary Review
skullface202013 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A criminal mastermind seeks to take a kingdom hostage with the aid of an imposter princess. Xena and Gabrielle must make sense of three lookalikes in order to save the day.

SYNOPSIS

King Lias (season 1 episode 15) is ill and believes that his days are numbered. Fortunately he has a wonderful daughter Diana (Xena doppelgänger), son-in-law Philemon, and a new grandchild. Lias decides to call Xena over to consult with his family in anticipation of his death; this is a very wise move. Shortly thereafter Gabrielle overhears Joxer bragging at the tavern that Xena has the hots for him. Something is certainly not right here, and she tells him to cut if off. Anyway, Gabrielle had expected to catch up with Xena at Lias' castle a day later, but she goes to meet her friend who apparently arrived early. However, the situation is much worse that merely Lias' impeding death. A punk warlord named Agis has found his own Princess Diana lookalike in the form of a local tramp named Meg. This explains Joxer's misguided believe that Xena is romantically interested in him; it was Meg whom he met at the tavern.

Agis is seeking to benefit from the death of King Lias. He plans to kill Diana and Philemon, install Meg as a puppet queen, and himself become the power behind the throne. As Gabrielle enters the castle she approaches Meg, whom she believes to be Xena. Unfortunately, Meg has been granted many powers since Xena is a close friend of the king, and Meg has Gabrielle thrown into prison. Joxer strolls into the castle and runs into Princess Diana, whom he believes to be Xena. He makes an unwanted physical advance on the princess and is immediately thrown into the can alongside Gabrielle. They're both quite confused to say the least. Agis certainly doesn't want Xena to interrupt his agenda, and he plans of having some thugs stop her as she travels toward the castle. His losers fail quickly, and Xena is on the scene. Agis is crafty and won't go down without another scheme or two. He seizes Princess Diana and sends her into hiding with his minions. Meg appears to have detained Gabrielle and is also taking her to Agis' camp, but things aren't what they seem. It's really Xena, and she frees Diana and Gabrielle!

The real Meg is still at the castle, and she's getting a bit on Agis' nerves. Furthermore, she really does have a huge crush on Joxer, and so he's thrilled but also interested in doing the right thing. Agis plans to have Meg kill King Lias, but Xena and crew jump into action. It's actually Meg who takes the elderly king to safety during the chaos. Meanwhile, Xena succeeds is saving Diana's infant son during the battle where they defeat Agis and his gang (this is in the same spot in the castle where Xena previously battled the goons employed by the Libyan slavers back in season 1 episode 15). The kingdom is saved, and Meg actually protected and cared for King Lias during his hour of need. It turns out she's had a difficult life and was working under of violence from Agis. She's not a bad person, and the recovering King Lias hires her to work in his castle. He will live for many more years to come.

NOTES

Joxer can't get over the fact that Meg finds him to be quite the catch, and at different times it lands him in serious trouble with both Princess Diana and Xena (Xena was so taken aback by his actions that she asked him if he was suicidal). Xena and Gabrielle are the closest of confidants to the good King Lias and his family.

Enter: Meg, Agis

Warrior... Princess... Tramp
Prismark1024 April 2020
This was an enjoyable romp with Lucy Lawless playing three characters and Joxer having a love interest.

An ill King Lias requests Xena to ensure that his daughter Diana's succession to the throne will go smoothly.

Diana looks like Xena, but a man called Agis has hired a rather dim but loose woman called Meg to pretend to be Xena. She also looks like her.

Lias and Diana do not realise that they have been talking to Meg who sends Gabrielle to the dungeons. Meg also shows a romantic interest in a bewildered Joxer.

Agis plans that the real Xena never reaches the castle but that plan fails.

Xena arrives and is surprised that Joxer is hitting on her and that Gabrielle is languishing in the dungeon.

That is some coincidence to have three people who like each other and have the same physical shape. It was a good blend of action and comedy.

Introducing Meg, a funny doppelganger of Xena. The main villain gets away at the end. Huh? Fun Xena-lite episode
reb-warrior31 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Xena comes back to help her look-a-like, Princess Diana. It turns out there is another doppelganger, Meg. Meg is working for a crook, Agis, who wants her to take Princess Diana's place. Meg has already been pretending to be Xena and has hooked up with Joxer, having sex with him. In the meantime, Gabrielle is traveling to Diana's kingdom alone to meet up with Xena and comes across Joxer in a pub bragging about how he hooked up with Xena. Comedy ensues as the three look-a-likes confuse everyone. This is a Xena-lite episode.

Meg turns out to be a very comical fun character. I love Meg. She's actually lovable as the downtrodden fun-loving tramp. She goes on to recur a few times in the series. Lucy Lawless does a great job playing the three roles. They really seem like different people.

Where to start with the humor? There's so much fun stuff, such as the two men hitting on Xena at the pub, thinking she is the one that Joxer was bragging about. There's Meg who is kind of clumsy playing with her fake chakram and later with her sword, as she says: "The name's Xena. That's Xena with a capital Z." Lol. There are the funny scenes of Gabrielle in the dungeon having interactions with Meg pretending to Xena, and Meg pretending to be Diana, plus later when Joxer is thrown in there as well. Loved the fight between Meg and Gabrielle. Gabs wins the fight and yet it's really Meg that beat up Gabs. Lol. It was a hilarious fight. I can't help but imagine that the two actresses must have had fun shooting that scene? There's so much funny stuff in this episode with many funny lines.

Philemon didn't have much to do this time around, having very few lines in comparison to the 'Warrior...Princess' episode. Loved hearing about Meg's past and seeing Gabs and King Lias empathize with her. Later Xena gives her another chance after seeing how Meg got King Lias out of harm's way: "I don't care what you've done in your past. Do good now and you are good." Xena never forgets how she was able to change her life around after being given another chance.

Joxer added to the humor and also did his job as the buffoon as he messes up Xena's plan. He does however really like Meg, and she likes him and they have some fun interactions: "I need your sword in my service right now." Lol

At the end, when everyone is fighting, Agis hooks the baby's basket over the fixture with a rope, then the real Xena comes along and grabs the rope. Notice Agis slips away. So Xena, Gabs, Joxer, Meg, and everyone defeats all the bad guys there, and yet the main villain got away? I thought that was kind of weird and unusual. I think Meg should have been the one to take Agis out, knocking him out, or tripping him, or something. Just an odd thing in this episode.

Love that King Lias gave Meg another chance and gave her the job as his cook. This was such a fun Xena-lite episode. Love the new character of Meg. 10/10.
