Back in the 1970s, drink driving laws were regarded as a bit of a nuisance. So when Bob goes for a restaurant meal with Thelma, he downs a few drinks as well as a bottle and half of wine.
Bob sees nothing wrong with driving home while over the legal drink limit. Only to be stopped by a policeman for a faulty car light. Only the police cannot fail to notice that Bob is a bit tipsy.
While at the police cell. Terry joins him for fighting at a football match with some rowdy Scottish fans.
As Bob does not want to lose his driving licence, Terry pretends to be Bob and gives his blood sample to the police surgeon instead. It does leave Bob being found guilty at the Magistrates court and having to pay a fine. As the police think that Bob must be Terry.
It is a tightly written comedy script by Clement and La Frenais. Mixed identities and a twist. Bob should know by now that Terry would not had gone to the football match with downing a few pints first.
