Fun introduction to 2 of our favorite criminals
The_Light_Triton17 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's crazy to fathom just how far Ricky & Julian have come from just being 2 common criminals in a small trailer park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Today, they're touring across Canada, the US and Europe, bringing their foul-mouthed, alcohol fueled and drug-happy personas with them, along with their best friend, Bubbles. And to think, they started here, on a small TV channel with very little advertising, and within a few years, their cult following grew and grew. This is the episode where a lot of it began.

Fresh out of jail after an 18-month sentence, Julian & Ricky are on their way back to Sunnyvale trailer park to pick up where their lives left off. While Julian has to evict a criminal named Cyrus who is living in the 1950s, Ricky just tries to find a place to sleep where Lahey & Randy (The trailer park supervisor & his assistant) won't harass him.

This is where most of us were introduced to the trailer park boys, and their associates. We meet Bubbles, who isn't much of a major character just yet, we meet Corey & Trevor, 2 guys who are a bit younger than Julian & Ricky, and look up to them like heroes, we meet J-Roc & the Rocpile, a group who adopt their image heavily from that of South Central LA gang (The only difference being that J-roc and his buddies would never commit a violent crime because his mom would ground him.) and most important, we meet Mr. Lahey, the ultimate antagonist for guys like Ricky & Julian.

There's a lot of episodes of the show that would be good to start with, but chronologically this is the beginning.

Where it all starts

In this debut episode, we get introduced to a large amount of characters. Some family members, but also our main foul-mouthed criminals like J-Roc, Ricky Julian, Corey & Trevor. Julian and Ricky after 18 months have gotten out of jail, and need to reclaim it from the playground bully Cyrus. The acting as you would expect is finding its footing, but all the key information is tidily delivered and we get a quick idea of our main cast/the show's pitch. Not laugh out loud funny yet, but the juvenile humor lands for a pilot.

Highlights: Ricky talking about "The F off motel" Cyrus's stupid theme song

Personal Note: Don't remember a lot about TPB but have fond memories of being smaller staying up laughing at this 7-8 years ago. Now, as a grown adult I plan to go through many of these seasons. Looking forward to this viewing journey. It's hard to believe this came out in 2001. No clue it was that old.

Not bad debut episode.

Warning: Spoilers
'Trailer Park Boys' is one of the brightest TV shows to come from Canada in some time, on a par with the also quite funny 'Corner Gas'. It's just a hoot the way that it makes fun of reality TV with a documentary crew following our various characters around and having the characters address the audience. Now, the episode overall isn't terribly funny but this introduction to the people of this trailer park sets them up well. Ricky (Robb Wells) and Julian (John Paul Tremblay) have gotten out of prison where they've been for 18 months. Julian wants to stay on the straight and narrow but is afraid his association with Ricky is just going to muck things up, so he's keeping his distance. And poor Ricky finds that he's got nowhere to go as his ex, Lucy (Lucy Decoutere) wants nothing more to do with him, and his dad is busy boozing it up. The principal story thread concerns the arrival of hostile jerk outsider Cyrus (Bernard Robichaud) who loves throwing his weight around with the assistance of his gun. Park supervisor Mr. Lahey (John Dunsworth) and "fat cheeseburger eating m.f." assistant Randy (Patrick Roach) are entertaining characters as always, although Bubbles (Mike Smith) is seen only briefly. Some funny bits arise out of the confrontations between Ricky and Julian, and Ricky remains the most engaging character out of all of them. A good if not great episode.

Warning: Spoilers
We are introduced to Julian and Ricky in the Van Allen Correctional Centre Outside Halifax, Nova Scotia after a brief black and white street shootout. They've been in jail for 18 months and Julian wants to change his ways for the better while all Ricky has on his mind is getting drunk and smoking dope. Ricky blames Julian for ending up in jail and says "Counselors told me it's societies fault not mine." Ricky says he doesn't need Julian's help anymore and immediately tries getting into his taxi for a ride back to the trailer park.

We meet Mr. Jim Lahey, 16 year trailer park supervisor who already knows Ricky and Julian are getting out of jail. He runs into Ricky wrestling a kid for smokes and breaks up the fight with Randy, the new shirtless assistant trailer park supervisor. Ricky says "Smokes, let's go!" and Randy doesn't give in. Julian visits Ricky's daughter Trinity before Ricky does. Julian left Cory and Trevor in charge of his trailer only to find out some guy named Cyrus moved in and is causing trouble in the park. He drives a Monte Carlo, carries a 9MM and is controlling the liquor and dope. Ricky runs into Cyrus at the convenience store that he is politely trying to rob and then threatens to shoot Ricky over a couple packs of smokes.

We meet the Roc Pile, J-Roc and Tyrone, who were born and raised in the trailer park. They meet up with Julian and warn him about Cyrus. Julian goes to visit Bubbles, his best friend who lives in a shed, for advice on dealing with Cyrus. Bubbles tells him Cyrus has been scared waiting for him to get out of jail and kindly acknowledges the cameramen. Ricky goes to his trailer when Sara answers the door and tells him to leave but Lucy, Ricky's girlfriend and the mother of their child let's him inside. Lucy tells him to leave and to go see Ray, Ricky's dad. Ricky goes to his trailer and hears loud music and says he'd rather sleep at the playground.

Mr. Lahey is planning to call the cops before a shootout occurs but Randy wants to resolve the issue without them. Everyone in the park is gathered outside Julian's trailer as Cyrus drives up and tries to get Julian to leave. Julian goes inside and throws Cyrus' belongings out the window. Cyrus threatens him with his gun and Julian points the gun at his head and tells Cyrus to pull the trigger. Cyrus drives off and Mr. Lahey and Randy thank Julian for getting rid of Cyrus. Later that night, Ricky shows up on Julian's porch without anywhere to go. Julian gives him hot dogs, vodka and his car to sleep in for two days. Ricky promises no more than two weeks and gets in the car.

From the very beginning, I felt deep connections between the characters in the park. Julian is seen as a role model by his peers and in his absence, things fell apart. J-Roc explained that being from the park makes you like family, which shows the level of respect they have towards Julian and even Ricky over someone like Cyrus, who isn't from the trailer park. Ricky's ignorance and Julian's intuition in contrast creates hilarious lines of dialogue and ridiculous situations. We see in the very first episode, this a show that values friendship, loyalty and the differences in human nature.
