License to Steal

Boxing has always been a dirty business. Surrounded by crooked men and gambling. Fights are thrown and prize fighters are a commodity. To be traded and any long term damage is the price you pay along with your purse getting all sorts of deductions.

Even these days it is never clear id any world champion got there trutlu on merit.

In the 1950s the sport of boxing was meant to have been cleaned up. Here Paul Marino is not sure, boxing is still corrupt.

After the death of a young boxer he decides to horn in on Allie Janowitz, the matchmaker. Also in his sights is the state boxing commissioner.

The boxer had no chance against Johnny Farmer, who was better than him in every way. It was a match that should never had been made and later Marino finds out that the dead boxer was a drug addict.

There is a little bit of romance for Jack Flood who woos the dead boxer's sister Maria. She has been forced by Allie Janowitz to tell a different story.

The story begins with the suspect death of a prizefighter just after his fight. So there is a trial, where many witnesses are asked about the reasons that would have lead to the man's death. Was the death accidental by arrangement? In prizefighters' world, everything is possible. You find here Harold J Stone, as a ruthless business man who is rotten to the bone, using other's sweat and endless sacrifices to make is own wealth. A golden character for this tremendous supporting actor who have always be shown in crime tales. Gene Evans is also in the game, as good as ever, even for this also near ever supporting character. No really new in this episode that emphasizes most on characters and intrigue rather than on action scenes. Corrupted managers in boxing business, a scheme which could not be forgotten in this show. Directed by Thomas Carr, a big screen grade B and Z movies film maker before going to TV stuff. Mostly a western specialist.

Not one of my favourites.

A young boxer named Kid Contreras dies in a mismatched boxing fight, Marino investigates boxing manager Allie Janowitz, and discovers that even boxing is run influenced and run by The Corruptors.

I'll credit this episode for the acting, the sincerity of it, and the impressive visuals, it's a thoroughly convincing episode, which looks and feels totally authentic.

I can offer up no substantial reason why, but I just didn't really care for the actual story, I am not a major fan of boxing, but it does interest me, especially at this point in time, I'm just not sure they dug into the match fixing aspect deeply enough.

The story was just a bit wishy washy, I found it just a little hard to get into.

Well made, just not very engaging.

5/10.
