Oro The Explorer

Impolite alien cosmonaut Oro (Walter Koenig) dressed in a gold lame jump-suit with a cheap motorcycle helmet and piloting what looks like a bird-feeder crashes into the Ark making a gaping hole. The central computer asks Devon (Keir Dullea), Garth (Robin Ward) & Rachel (Gay Rowan) to fix it.

Devon and his friends discover Oro living in a laboratory near the spot where he crashed. With him is his assistant Idona (Alexandra Bastedo) a runaway from one of the biospheres on the Ark. He has been stripping the Ark for spare parts to fix his ride so he can get back to his home planet.

Like other characters he meets on the show Oro has no interest in Devon's assertions of impending doom i.e the Ark's collision course with a sun. In Oro's case he already knows but doesn't care. He just wants to get home. When Devon can't interest Oro in helping alter the Ark's course the question then becomes why don't he and Garth grab the little creep and toss him out the hole his ship made.

Since Oro's cute assistant starts checking out Garth that idea starts looking better and better. But one lingering problem asserts itself altering the conclusion.

They evidently sought to capture some of the look and feel of Star Trek in this episode simply by casting Koenig. But the character has no personality and a simplistic arc. This is probably the least interesting episode of the entire series. At least the Garth character is allowed to carve out a more favorable impression in the continuing narrative. Mostly he was depicted as a hot-headed dunce or at best a noble savage, The inconsistency of what Devon, Garth & Rachel were wearing in each episode was not explained. Most episodes had them wearing colonial 1800s frontier style costumes native to their home biosphere Cypress Corners. Circuit of death had them in the same silver lame track-suits they were in this episode. But we see them changing into those track suits like they have never worn them before hinting at the lack of sequence.

The Pisces episode (episode 4) depicted the docking of a ship on which Devon, Garth & Rachel were given a tour so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense here when she is shown in awe of the cheap junk-pile ship Oro is repairing.

Again we aren't seeing a lot of people in these episodes. This one had five actors total which cuts in to Devon's credibility when he says Oro will be leaving behind thousands of people aboard the Ark. Ten episodes in to the series we have seen very few actors. Body traffic is an important aspect of scenery. A living tapestry of humanity helps presents the illusion of depth. Five actors on a cheap set looks like small-town dinner theatre.
