Uk Police action!

Warning: Spoilers
Detective Chief Inspector, George Swell, gets a lead on an old case. The case involves a villain who had escaped from prison while he was doing a 10 year bit for gold smuggling.

It seems the man's mother is ill. Swell thinks the crook will try and contact her. Swell is given 48 hours to set up surveillance. He is assigned an Inspector from the Police Flying Squad as help, The man, Patrick Mower, and Swell do not like each other. They had been involved in a botched stakeout several years before.

They set up in an abandoned building across from the apartment of the suspect's mother. Two days go by and no joy on the stakeout.

They are in the process of closing down the site when an ambulance pulls up to the apartment. The woman is brought out, loaded onto the ambulance and driven off.

It occurs to the Detectives that something is amiss here. Into the car they leap and after the ambulance they race. Sure enough, it stops at a block of flats nowhere near a hospital. The villain whom they are looking for, comes out to help his mom out of the ambulance.

Back up is summoned by radio and John Law quickly swoops in and arrests the escaped convict. (color)

The second episode introduces Craven with his new partner DI Haggerty played by Patrick Mower.

They start off on the wrong foot. Craven thinks Haggerty is flash and looking for fast promotions. He ruined one of Craven's stakeout some time ago.

Now Craven has Haggerty on another stakeout. Craven has a hunch that a man wanted for some gold bullion smuggling will come out of hiding to visit his ill mother.

Haggerty thinks that the suspect is dead and this is a waste of time.

It really is an episode of two contrasting personalities. Not unlike the original incarnation of Special Branch. Although Mower is much more smoother than Derren Nesbitt.

By the end, it is Haggerty who has a hunch when their superiors calls off the stakeout. I was just left wondering how did Craven managed to leave the vicinity of the area so quickly.
