Not a Pleasant Ride

Back in the 1980s and still today, J. Edgar Hoover was Satan. Oh, with the politicized FBI we have today where Agents routinely release classified information and violate the rights of cirizens (so long as they're on the wrong side politically) to paraphrase a famous song, "Mister, we could use a man like Edgar Hoover again." But once Democrats label someone a Great Satan there's no hope for them historically. Joseph McCarthy had nothing to do with Hollywood and he never claimed he had a list of names of spies, though he very well could have had one since the State Department was riddled with them (from Soviet files and our Venona files, during the Yeltsyn thaw). The only evidence J. Edgar ever wore women's clothes comes from one tainted source who publicly expressed his hatred for Hoover and which legitimate historians once would have rejected. But when someone is labelled a Great Satan even when beloved "facts" about them prove elusive or outright lies they continue being common currency. It's an everlasting hardship to someone like me who has had a quest for Truth. Not justice or the American way since the latter changes and the former is a weasel word that means different things from one society to the next. I believe truth will lead to justice and we can't have one without the other.

J. Edgar Hoover ran a tight ship at the FBI and lots of urban legends grew up around him. His "secret files" are like "Confederate gold." Legends that no one can find as they probably never existed.

But in the early to mid 1980s when "Scarecrow" was on prime time. Hoover had been dead for such a short time the legend was still a threat.

This is a surprisingly serious episode, featuring guest star Bo Hopkins as a sort of terrorist who wants to bring the US down by leaking information about public figures. Why doesn't he just get a job at the New York Times?

Not a pleasant episode. Hopkins is particularly nasty. I never cared for him as an actor but lots of old "Rockford Files" alumni pop up on "Scarecrow" including Jack Garner, Jim's brother (though not in this episode; he's usually the bartender at Ned's).
