Rab turns respectable!
Rabical-9112 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
'Right' is the final episode to feature Eric Cullen as Burney, who was written out after this series following ill health and imprisonment for being found in possession of child pornography.

There is crisis in Govan. Riots are taking place in the streets, Gash has become a drug addict who is getting his fix from the local ice cream van. Burney has become a bigoted patriot whilst Mary is on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

After a three month stretch in prison, Rab decides it is time to make an example of his family by becoming respectable and getting a job, however a trip to the job centre yields nothing. Mary tries seeking advice from her local councillor Sandy McKean, whose ego is so inflated you could use it as a bouncy castle. When he fails to help, Mary decides to take matters in her own hands...

'Right' allows the underrated ( and sadly deceased ) Gerard Kelly to shine in the role of Sandy McKean. The minute he alights from his suburban house spouting his 'wither the sodium street light' speech, you know what to expect. The episode is also a more than acceptable exit for Eric Cullen. Whether or not he was guilty of the charges, Cullen was one of the show's greatest assets and after he left it was never quite the same. Pattison tried replacing Burney in series four with cousin Screech, who was played by David McKay but it did not work and he was soon written out. Burney was to be reinstated for the fifth series however this plan collapsed when Cullen died from a massive heart attack in 1996 whilst undergoing an operation to correct a bowel disorder. He was only 31.

Lee Cornes, making his third and final 'Nesbitt' appearance, appears again as the job centre clerk ( he played the job centre clerk in 'Work', the opening episode of series one ). Also appearing is the equally underrated Paul Brooke, as the prison Governor who tries teaching Rab the values of 'joining the system'.

Something to watch out for - Rab's bashing the government as ''jumped up fascist bastards!''. This was the very description Rab gave to the then Tory government in the very first 'Rab' sketch used in the first episode of 'Naked Video' in 1986.

Funniest bit - Burney consulting a book about patriotism. ''There's too many wrong elements corrupting out society, he says grandly. Rab berates him. ''The only way this book will turn you into a tall Arian god is if you stand on the bloody thing!'' says he before hitting Burney in the face with the book!
