When the show begins, a mother is being arrested for murder. Her young son is naturally upset and your heart really goes out to him. Well, the same occurs when the boy then shows up at Petrocelli's office...the lawyer and his missus can't help but feel for the boy...and he agrees to take the case. Interestingly, the tough Lieutenant (David Huddleston) actually referred the kid to Petrocelli and although he has to investigate, he, too, is pulling for the mother. A truly unusual and interesting episode simply for this reason.
Why was this mother arrested? Well, she was seen arguing with her married lover and only moments later, he was dead...and it seemed logical she did it. This leads to an odd ending where you STILL don't really know who murdered the man...as Petrocelli has multiple hypotheses about the murderer.
