The Captain
Prismark1011 March 2019
Adapted by Richard Harris from his own stage play. This comedy was shot on film and accompanied without a laughter track.

The first episode chimed with me like those Alan Ayckbourn plays.

The star of the show is the Captain. The horrendous, stuck up and pompous Roger (Robert Daws) who is absurdly cruel to his put upon wife Miriam (Brenda Blethyn).

Roger is the captain of the local cricket team. He is obsessed with cricket. He prints out maps for the rest of the team so they can get to the local club game, which most of them misplaced.

His day starts off badly. He cannot get to the cricket match as his Volvo won't start. He blames Miriam for this and then further blames her when she could not fix it.

In contrast easy going teammate Kevin (Timothy Spall) turns up in his battered Renault. He brings with him the brassy and loud Maggie (Josie Lawrence.)

At least it means Roger can get to the cricket match. Miriam can follow later when she gets the car fixed.

It is a contrast with two mismatched couples. Maggie and Miriam combine and manage to fix the car and save the day. Miriam also gets her own back on Roger.

It is a genteel comedy, I did not laugh much and was hoping that Roger would fall flat on his face.
