For the first episode of season four, and the first in the European theater, this is going to get a pass mainly due to the fresh environment where the series has landed. Instead of the famous Taratupa beaches we have been reassigned to the shores of southern Italy in a town called Voltafiore (not typing that many times). Even though the main cast remains the same, we are introduced to a new set of townspeople in the form of a crooked mayor, played by the nice character actor Jay Novello.
This was a simple plot where the mayor is trying to swindle the Navy out of all the money possible. From claiming a whiplash from a door hitting him, to creating an accident with the PT 73, this mayor has his hands into everything. But when Fuji makes the trip to Italy and the mayor accidentally comes across him, the mayor believes he will receive an cash award from Binghamton by turning in the Japanese spy. McHale has to come up with something quick.
This was a simple, safe plot that did not cause any problems for the viewer or cast. Not thrilled that the show felt like the series needed to move to Europe but here is hoping for more interesting scripts from the new surroundings.
