Numbers turf war
bkoganbing30 January 2015
Never did McCloud look more out of place in New York City than in this episode where his adventures took him to the Lower East Side Of New York where his friend Sergeant Joe Broadhurst gets shot. It all involves a turf war among black and Italian gangsters, the respective heads of which are Cesare Danova and Lou Gossett, Jr.

Terry Carter witnesses a shootout between two button men from the mobs where the Italian guy is killed and he's shot by the black guy. To throw suspicion away, the black mob dirties up the good name of Joe Broadhurst. But Sam McCloud just doesn't believe it and he more than interjects himself in the Internal Affairs investigation.

The key to all of this is Danny Thomas who is a tailor on the Delancey Street and buys his regular number from his good friend Jack Kruschen the butcher who has a sideline taking bets. When Thomas's number hits which is 756 he thinks the ship has come in. But the policy slips were also robbed during the shootout and Thomas is making a big fuss about where is his money?

40 years ago the Lower East Side was still an ethnically mixed melting pot which is you had rent control was still affordable. Now that neighborhood made famous as the slum where Alfred E. Smith and so many others came from is some of the most expensive real estate in the world and is yuppie central.

You couldn't film that story today and be creditable.
