No Sources Revealed

This is a priceless episode to start off the fifth season off this wonderful show. A man walks into the station and because Lou is not there, he talks to Mary. It turns out he is a whistle blower and he has evidence of political graft. The story is put on the air and after congratulations for the story (which Ted tries to hog), Mary is approached by a man from the justice department, demanding that she reveal her sources. She goes before a grand jury and is to surrender to authorities later and be put in jail. The stuff that goes on with Sue Ann is to die for; she throws a prison party for Mary. Then she arrives at the county jail and is put in a cell with two hookers. They are also hilarious. This is a top ten piece.

Mary receives information - and proof - of political graft and puts the story to air. The justice department then demand that Mary and Ted reveal their sources, or risk jail.

Ted and Sue Ann have many funny moments - swinging from overblown concern to tactless self-indulgence. Some great Lou - Mary moments too.

One of my top ten favourite episodes. It is a good episode overall but the superb performance of the late Barbara Colby as jailbird Sherry seals it. Sherry also has many great lines.

Just a bit overdone, but good and funny just the same !

I enjoy this whole tv series,I think it was mostly-great,overall. The writing was usually good or very-good,with many truly-great episodes too. Now,no tv-show is perfect,so of course there were a few take-it-or-leave-it episodes, and even a few dogs, bombs, and howlers that managed to sneak into the mix here and there.

Unfortunately, the writing can seem rather overdone on a few of the episode plots that have one of the characters 'standing on principle',or 'trying to do the right thing' against 'the system' or 'the powers that be' or whomever.

Whatever point it is that the writers are trying to make is usually a good one. The problem is,that in a-few of the episodes, the point or the lesson is pushed too-hard,without nuance, subtlety,or finesse.

Some of the best lessons,in real-life or on tv,are delivered gently, with a few blank-spots for the viewer or student to fill-in for themselves. Lessons learned in that way are usually memorable for a lifetime.

This episode was possibly a bit overdone, but overall it was very-good and pretty-funny to-boot. 85/100.
