Maggie the Matchmaker
kgraovac4 November 2023
Maggie invites everyone over to her house for a "thing" -- she insists it's not a party. It's also an excuse for her to set her 22-year-old brother Bobby up with Dot. Both the party and Maggie's plans are a bust when everyone leaves early due to boredom, and Bobby hits it off with Jan instead.

The B-plot has Sonny wearing shades since his pupils are dilated from an eye exam. When he realizes the customers give bigger tips to what they think is a blind pianist, Sonny decides to milk it for as long as he can.

The start of the 1981-82 season was delayed due to a writer's strike, and many of this season's episodes were aired out of order. This was among the first filmed with the revamped cast. Maggie's hair is longer and would only be this style for 2 episodes. The script has Maggie discussing her widowhood with the others and also has her thanking everyone for being so nice to her since she began working at Above the Top. These scenes should have been played weeks ago.

Ann Jillian's character is closer to the Season 1 incarnation of Cassie in both hairstyle and attitude here. There must have been a break for the strike after they filmed the first episodes. She is still portrayed as brassy, man-crazy and to the point. It's a shame the character was diluted from the original conception. The scene where she gets Maggie to admit her lust for the box boy is very reminiscent of Season 1 Cassie.

Actually, the sexier Season 1 vibe runs throughout this episode thanks to Cassie's one-liners, Maggie's funny explanation about her and Bobby's age difference, and the make-out scene in Maggie's kitchen between Bobby and Jan.

Because this aired out-of-order, the scene where Dennis announces his separation from Mildred seems off. Nancy then makes a play for Dennis as if nothing happene in the previous episode (See "Jealousy or Mildred Fierce").

Despite the continuity problems (the network's fault - NOT the writers), this is one of the better offerings of Season 2. It is well-written, the situation is realistic and the subplot provides some worthy moments for both Sonny and Nancy.

There are several minutes of footage missing from the current version airing on TV and streaming services:

The kitchen scene at the beginning was longer. Maggie gives Nancy her invitation. Nancy warns Maggie it better not be a chain letter.

Sonny singing "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" has been cut.

The tag scene is missing where the girls are counting their tips in the dining room and Cassie embarrasses Nancy by blurting out that Nancy "has the hots" for Dennis.

SONGS: Sonny sings "Georgia On My Mind".
