After a very ambitious show about car alarms, the studio is quickly cleared of the Tool Time set to make room for Cooking with Irma, starting a little ahead of schedule. It seems Irma has some big news: she's just become a grandmother. She'll be away for a week, and she asks if Tim and Al will fill in for her...with one more major request: if Al could host, and Tim be his assistant. Al relished the idea, but the Tool Man wasn't so sure. At home, it's class picture day. Randy shows off his picture of him ogling the girl next to him. Her name's Beth and he wants to go steady with her, despite having never even talked to her before. I'd say he's got his work cut out for him. Speaking of which, the next day was the premiere of Cooking with Irma with Al "The Food Man" Borland, and his assistant, Tim. The very first thing Tim noticed was that this audience wasn't too keen on his jokes, or his vain attempts at making them. Al was a hit, however, showing he really knows his way around the kitchen. The dish they were making was gumbo, and Tim learned the hard way which peppers are the hottest. Needless to say, the day didn't go over too well for him, which is why he wanted to opt out of next day's show. Promise or not, Tim couldn't stand not being the center of attention, but don't let him tell you otherwise.
Word gets back to Randy that Beth is "mildly interested" in him, and so Brad arranges for a double date for them. If he's lucky, he'll get "the nod." Tim, meanwhile, ego still sore, helps Jill make Al's gumbo recipe, all the while complaining how he isn't cut out to be someone's assistant. After that, he decides to give being Al's assistant another chance. So now, it's on to the kids' incredibly boring double date, where they sit around the living room drinking lemonade. Randy attempts to tell a joke, but fall flat as a pancake. But what do you expect, it was one of Tim's. Overall, Beth seems like a somewhat stuck-up girl, especially when Jill serves them sugar cookies. She says they don't have sweets at their house because they make you fat. Quite the presumptuous girl. Randy offers her another sweet, erroneously referring to them as "booger cookies" and in his shame, he bails. Fortunately Wilson was in his backyard...isn't he always? He hears of Randy's plight and tells him it's all part of growing up, but you have to make the effort or you won't succeed. That, and he points out the fact that ever since Randy came outside, Beth had been watching. There may be hope. Now, back to Al's cooking show. Tim comes back and has decided to just assist and leave what jokes can be had to Al. The Food Man even has his very first accident as host by accidentally tossing the uncooked duck through a window. So, Tim learned that being second banana isn't so bad, and as for Randy, it seems they went a little beyond "the nod", and she gave him a kiss. It was probably a Hershey kiss, but what they don't know won't hurt them.
One of my favorite episodes. I liked the role reversal with Al hosting a show and Tim being his assistant. You may recall back to Season 1's "Battle of Wheels" where they switched places on Tool Time, but Al sank like a stone. Odd that he was clumsy at hosting a tool show, but with hosting the cooking show, he fit right in. I guess cooking is a subject he likes to talk about as well as perform, but with tools, he just wants to perform and not talk, which is why Tim is the host. "Too Many Cooks" is hilarious and has some genuine heartfelt moments. It's definitely a must-see for casual viewers of the show.
